State of Emergeny in Thailand. Another coup attempt ?

    Thailand calls state of emergency

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok amid rumours of a state coup.

"I declare Bangkok under a severe state of emergency," he said on television. He is currently at the UN in New York.

The measure came after tanks took up position around the Thai government headquarters in Bangkok, where they blocked traffic.

An army-owned TV station is showing images of the royal family and songs linked in the past with military coups.

Mr Thaksin announced he had removed the chief of the army, Thai television reported.

The prime minister ordered troops not to "move illegally", Reuters quoted him as saying in a voice broadcast on Thai television .

I don't like Thaksin for a multitude of reason.

I do believe that there will eventually be problems with a muslim Prime Minister leading a majority Buddhist country.

He's the guy that sits down first at the UN for having run his country for the longest continous time right?

I saw reports earlier today on the news that the military had overthrown the PM and declared martial law.

No, that's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, not the Prime Minister. King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the longest reigning monarch, though, having been on the throne for 60 years.

I wonder how far Queen Elizabeth II is after that (in ranking) - 54 years so far. (Reigning concurrently in 16 independent sovereign states)

Anyway - I thought the standard protocal for ANY decent military coup was to proclaim it was a temporary measure while things quietened down and they sorted out new elections, and if you want it real quiet and GOOD plannign for elections you gotta wait at least 20 years...

The package deals are especially good. One sweaty week in Bangkok followed by three days at the Clinic in Sydney all for the bargain price of $1500 (includes all transfers, daily a la carte breakfasts and 'massages' - children extra).

Can anyone think of a more aptly named place?

Particulary since the name was unintentional!

There's a terrible city in Holland called 'Helmond', which literally translates to 'Hellmouth'.

I saw on the news today that the coup was backed, and possibly ordered, by the King. It was apparently timed for when the PM was in New York to avoid bloodshed.
