Starter build

What build do you guys personally think is the best to start with ladder? Sorc, hdin, summoner necro? or something else? O_O;;;

Re: Starter build

Start a sorc and kill monsters in nightmare with frozen orb and collect the flawless gems to cube them up to pgems. That will provide the currency to trade for starter items in these forums.

Also consider making Stealth, Spirit (sword) and Rhyme runewords for your sorc, as well as Insight for your merc. A couple of visits to the nightmare Countess (Forgotten Tower in act 1) will provide the runes. See here for more information, but make sure that you read the text before proceeding to the runeword chapter links found at the bottom, else you might end up with putting your precious runes into the wrong items which will lead to failure.

With these items and a few other self-found or traded ones you can make a couple of visits to nightmare Mephisto and perhaps Andariel to find good stuff yourself. That's why it should be a sorc - she can teleport and be there very quickly.

Re: Starter build

A meterorb sorc is great for starting out, only need really cheap runewords like spirit to function, or you can just go with full tal rasha's set, which, once you've gathered a bunch of pgems you can probably get the set pieces individually.

Re: Starter build

Honestly it depends on the player and their skill level. For example, Sorcs are great, but some people simply aren't suited to the playstyle, at least at first (some never).

There really is no ideal because the best choice depends on the player.

Re: Starter build

My two suggestions would be Charged Boltress or Fishymancer.

With a Charged Boltress you can decimate everything very easily up until NM act 5.

Once you get to NM you can farm Mephisto for the basic gear needed to compete in Hell. NM Meph can drop some pretty good uniques.

the best inexpensive caster items are actually runewords

spirit: tal + thul + ort + amn, 4 socket swords/shields: +2 skills, fast cast, life, mana, resists, etc.

insight: ral + tir + tal + sol, 4 socket polearms: lots of damage, meditation (mana regen) aura, put this on an act 2
merc

lore: ort + sol, 2 socket helms: +1 skills, mana, resists

stealth: tal + eth, 2 socket armor: run/walk, mana regen, hit recovery, resists

rhyme: shael + eth, 2 socket shield: magic find, resists, blocking, cannot be frozen

with some rune finding luck from countess or in general slaying thousands of monsters (places like flayer jungle and cow level are nice for this) you can have all of these runewords assembled by late normal or early nightmare, giving you +3 skills, nice mana regen, nice resists and lots of life and mana

Fishymancer
can complete hell with little to no gear at all. The only issue he needs to consentrate on is getting his resists up to avoid those pesky mobs that corpse explosion on death ..and gloams.

So after a ladder reset i would make a sorc and use her to gear up a more fun character.
