ss or whistans?

making a cold (blizz) sorc guys. need tips on which shield i should use... ss or whistans. ss is very str tolling but looks worth it. whistans is not and looks good for it's cost.

the option of a sanctuary monarch also comes into mind, would be less strength, nice def. vs. missiles, resists, but no damagre reduce.

can't decide... lol

please give me you're pov's pros and cons, thanks all :)

SS:

Pros

-DR
-Resists
-High Defense
-Max block can be achieved pretty easily with a raven or two

Cons

-High Strength Requirement
-Requires more dex for max block

Whitstans:

Pros

Easily attainable max block
Low Strength Requirement

Cons

No resists unless with a diamond or um rune
No DR

I think SS>Whitstans even though it requires more strength and dex for max blocking.

Here's my reasoning:

1) The Dex for max block is not tough to get if you wear a 20 raven or two of them.
2) Strength requirement is not that bad considering sorc's get 2 life for every 1 vitality so you don't get much more life if you put the points into vitality.
3) DR is well worth the strength requirement of SS considering Sorc's are very fragile.
4) More Resists is never a bad thing.

My sorc uses SS now that I'm a bit richer and I'm very happy with it. I play HC and not even 1 close call yet using SS.

If you have any other questions, fire away.

i like you're reasoning wrath, but i'm not sure if i'm apt to using 2 ravens, i feel 2 sojs or 2 fcr rings with mana/res/stats would be better here. still, you're reasons are convincing enough i may just use ss w/o the ravens.

1 Raven is enough.

I was only suggesting two if you only wanted to spend a few hard points into Dex.

You could easily get by with 1 or if you want to put a bit more into dex, 2 sojs is not a bad substitute. Like I said, Sorc's get a bad deal when it comes to life for vitality so putting more into dex and using charms for life isn't that bad of an idea.

Well if you can afford the str and dex for SS, i would suggest going with it. The benefits of that shield are plain to see, as Whistan's has low req but not that much to offer except 40% faster blockrate.
You don't need to use Raven's to achieve max-block. I would call that a waaste when you can use 2xSoj.

if you're on ladder an upped Moser's Blessed Circle socketed with two PDiamonds (or two um if you can afford it) is a very nice option, too. At least, that's what my Blizzy is wearing :)

actually i would recommand Spirit runeword but otherwise Winstans is a good choice with 2 x P-diamonds. Mosers is also great because it already has natural resistence and it has 2 open sockets which allows 2 P-diamonds for more resistence.

I won't recommand ss thou...it's requirements for a sorc is rather high.

If you meant whitstans, it can only get 1 socket.

It's not really that high of a requirement. My sorc has max block and enough strength to wear SS and still has 1.3k life w/o bo and not so good charms. She gets such a bad deal with life. 1 Vitality=2 life like I've said, you're better off putting the points into dex and strength and use charms for life. 4 levels of all points into Vitality equals one perfect sc of vita and the stats can be used better elsewhere IMO.

Even just 1 perfect raven saves you 20 dex so you can put more into strength to wear SS. Plus a few strength charms makes the requirements easy to reach. And after the requirements are met the rest can go into vitality as you don't need energy.

The requirements of SS are well worth the DR plus resists methinks.
