SPF Guide Book

SPF Guide Book

Looking through the threads it becomes clear that a lot of people have no idea what some of our abbreviations/phrases mean, and i must admit that there are a few that still puzzle me, i.e. IIRC. So what i thought i'd do is put together a SPF Guide Book that explains all the abbreviations/phrases that we all use so that we don't get any more:

"PM? What's a PM"

or

"What is ISO"

So if you could let me know what abbriviations or phrases you use and what they mean, i'll then try to collate them all and we'll see if Alter Ego will sticky the post so that everyone will be able to find it.

So what do you think?

I can remember only a few. Those you mentioned (ISO, PM) are like phrases, just like IMO(in my opinion), IMHO(I my humble opinion), ASAP (as soon as possible) and I am sure there must be others I cant remember right now  .
Other kind of abbreviations we frequently use are items names: WF, GF, IKSC, and those I bet you know better than me, Beau! There are also words which we made up, like skiller. last week someone PMed me about what a skiller means...

Hope I helped...

One more thing, this dictionary should be attached to the FAQ (if there is nothing like this there already). This would make everyone's life simpler.

WF doesn't have to mean Windforce, it can also be short for "Waimea Factor". That means having luck in finding items. Waimea posted here before the ATMA debacle of last summer and had awesome luck finding them l33t items...

I think you're being overly optimistic if you believe that stating stuff in a guide book will eliminate those threads. The problem with FAQs is that probably only 5% of the people that should read them actually do read them.

I know but it's worth a try don't you think, if we give the thread a decent obvious title then people might look there before posting.

So what does l33t mean, and also what is IIRC, that one is still bugging me?

i agree with nf. in theory its a good idea, but in practice, very few beginners to the forum read the rules or the FAQ. normally it takes osmeone askign the question for them to look it up. i knwo i didnt read the rules, TOS, FAQs or anythign when i joined.

I think i'll hunt through the posts and see what abbreviations/phrases we use the most and put them in as well.

I'm sure it'll be useful, if for no one else, then for myself at least :D

Even if the majority don't read it, if it is attached to the FAQ, at least some will read it. I still haven't read the TOS or rules for the forums (I just stick with good old common sense, hasn't led me astray yet), but I read the FAQ within my first 5 visits to the boards.

One I thought of that I still don't know what it stands for is those initials for the virtual bar, as in, head over to the XX and have a drink on me. I think it is EM???

I saw a post of "What does MF mean?" the other day too.

@beau_nidle 1337 is called leet speak (short for elite, don't ask me why). It is an annoying "language" that cropped up on the internet in the last few years, in which letters are replaced by numbers or symbols. In many cases, it becomes nearly impossible to determine what, if anything, the poster was trying to say. In my opinion, and I think that of most SPFers (theres another abbreviation for you) it would be better to just pretend it doesn't exist and let it go the way of the dodo bird.

EMB = edtlahq's Memorial Bar. Eric D Taylor (edtlahq) was a member of the SPF who had a sudden and unexpected death last year. The "virtual bar" was renamed in his honor for a friend a lot of people knew but had never met.

What gets me as an "old time" D2 player is the skill abbreviations for classes I don't play that often. Sometimes I need to get out my D2/D2X book and look up the skills.

Edit: typose

Ahhh....thanks Gruntmaster. That must have been during my hiatus from D2. I didn't play much last year at all.

While it may not help for some of the more D2 related abbreviations, acronymfinder.com is a great site for finding out what a lot of abbreviations stand for. According to the site it can tell you the meaning of over 344,000 abbreviations and acronyms.

Intead of calling it a guide, why not just call it a list of abbreviations? The sensible thing would be to treat it like the other guides. Compile a final list, put it in a thread of its own, then create a link to the thread in the FAQ thread.

There are a lot of people who won't use it, but it seems a like a useful resource to put together. The challenge is the sheer number of abbreviations. Sometimes one pops up that stumps even me (like someone using "250/10" or something like that, meaning a poison damage small charm).

I'll see if I can track down an existing list somewhere to make the process a bit easier.
