SPF FAQ Input Thread - Last Chance!

You might have noticed me fiddling with AE's SPF FAQ - sorry AE - but it might be time for an updated one.

So if you've got any input on what you like/dislike/want etc in the SPF FAQ now/here is the time to say so. Or just say "leave it alone".

Personally I think the FAQ is great and the info is outstanding, but it just needs tidying up a bit and making better sections. Starting with a "If you read nothing else, read this bit" section comprising of the GAT, rules, etc.

    Thoughts please?

(For those of you who never step out of the SPF have a shufty at the Community FAQ.)

EDIT: @Hrus. I have seen your work. I just wanted to know what people would like as an addition to it. It seemed a good idea if the people who are supposed to read it would be interested in it's content.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

I think that SPF build guide section needs to be updated. Somewhere in the Moderator trash forum, there should be a thread started by me, where I tried to make a new version with a short info about each build and recommended some new builds too.

How about mentioning a ban on RWM and RRM? :badteeth:

    It's fine really.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

I like the idea of an updated build guide like Hrus suggested. It would be nice if we could include builds from other versions like 1.07 and 1.09 in the guide as well. I just started a 1.07 character the other day and I'm in the process of reading the 1.07 guide and the gossip thread, however, I still have no idea on how to invest my stat and skill points. I know this would require alot of time and effort from those who play the earlier versions but I think it would make for a nice addition to the SPF build guide. Just a suggestion

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

I keep trying to con someone into updating the 1.07 FAQ but no one is that gullible. :sad2:

@RTB - I was going to sticky that for April fools but I forgot.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

Whilst random searching the forums a few months ago (i think about the version switcher) I found an earlier version of "what should be added to the stickies" and it contained a post full of info from w_m iirc about the forum lingo: squid, EUs, the EMB's name etc, perhaps incorporating a version of that into the sticky might be helpful

Otherwise it seems fine as it is, though perhaps a hint that diablo2 is in patch 1.11, and teh strat compendium has 1.10/1.09 guides

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

I like it, but I'd like to see the mat/pat compilation as a separate sticky again. It's not the kind of thing someone who doesn't know about is going to think to go look for inside a different thread, but it's extremely neat and useful and a good showcase for the forum.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

I agree with this. That's definately the thread I look at most in the SPF, its a pain to search for it every time I want to read about someone's build.

Thirded. It's one of the best character guide/inspiration sources on the forums.

Fourthed. I hardly bother going to guides any more, the m/p/g thread has everything one could all sitting there in a nice convenient thread, and the guides in the character sub-forums are almost entirely focussed on cattlenet.

You know you could have PM'd about that initially.

So is there any input on the actual Sticky? The idea is to minimize the number up there.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

My favourite thread is stickied again :azn: Thanks!

As for the stickies & the FAQ, huffman encoding is the way to go. The most popular threads to be accessed through the fewest mouse clicks.
The problem with current thread ordering in the forum is that it only takes into account posts, not thread views.

I'd like to see the Questions thread get linked to from somewhere. I don't mind two clicks to get to it, so maybe a link in the FAQ? Ditto for any other long running threads.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

I'd also like to see an up to date abbreviation guide. Many things come up on the forum that are abbreviated and new comers (and some old hands) are at a loss to figure out what is being referred to. I know many guides will include a key to acronyms and abbreviations they use but after some time these come into general use and many people are at a loss to find out what they mean.

    Some examples:
    Forum and mod abbreviations:
    RRM/RWM
    Break point and statistical ones:
    FCR, FRW, BP
all the skill ones like DT, LS etc.
Item ones are the worst for me. These include white items:
    CV, GT etc
    Unique and set items:
eth VG, shako, BK, SoJ etc
Monster stats like MSLE, FE CE LE
Builds that are particularly common and always abbreviated:
    Fishyzon, WWsin, etc.
Whatever else everyone can think of.

Think it might help the poor sods who are newish to the game and suddenly read a thread on getting a Socketed CS for CTA for their WWsin so that FHR BP's don't really matter. (Lame example I know)

There used to be an abbreviation FAQ in the newcomer forum.

She has the whooooole world in her sig. She has the whoooole world...

I agree with Hrus that the build guide (and a few other parts) need up-to-date-ing. The rest is good.

    Re: SPF FAQ Input Thread

Ok so basically we are looking at:

    • general tidying
    • updating build guide - although partly replace by WinMar's compilation

    Is that it?

If anyone has any of the build guides saved to their hard drive, I'd appreciate a PM; I know Borlag had them (anyone contact him off-site?). I'll start checking the links but so far things aren't looking great. Even the Wayback Machine can't find AbbaZabba's Vindicator/Templar guide.

*Please take the time to input into this*. The idea is for the Stickies to be your reference and easy to read. Can't do that unless we know what you want.

I've added the Tourney and Winmar's Compilation back to the Stickies. I still think four Stickies is one too many but .. we'll go with it.
