An idea which was thrown around on the hellgate london forums a couple years ago which created a lot of buzz (though when the game did eventually came out it was disappointing) was the implementation of events.
I'm sure diablo3 will have events but because it's blizzard (whom i'm a huge fanboy) and the genre being an ARPG the options are endless. Does anyone else think it would be awesome to have an event where yourself and say X amount of other players are loaded into a place which you cannot leave until you die. It starts out with a wave of easily defeated skeletons but then gets harder and harder until 5 minutes in the waves are coming at you quicker and comprise all types of hard to beat monsters. The winner could receive a prize of some sort...................this would also work with clans. How damn awesome would it be if you had this type of event with your clan and seeing if you could survive longer than another clan.
Another event could be a gladiator type coliseum. Basically what i'm trying to get at is i think there are so many ridiculously cool things that could be done to D3 that are different to what has ever been done before and things that would prolong the lifespan of D3 to extraordinary lengths.
Blizzard are so far ahead of any of game company in my opinion it's scary......... i'm going a little f***in nutty waiting for this monumental piece of glory which is D3
