    "Sorc"

My friend and I have been having a debate how the word, abbrivation, segment, or nickname is pronounced by Diablo 2 players. Acording to him, the word is pronounced "Sorck", and that it is pronounced that way in diablo 2 because he is a professional and all professionals pronounce it that way and the english langauge is on his side. However, I pronounce it "Source", which I think almost everyone says.

Please give me input on which one you think is proper.

Source never even crossed my mind until now.

    To me it's obviously a 'hard' c.

I voted "sork" because that's how I say it, but both ways to pronounce it are common enough that there probably can't be a "winner." Although I would say the general rule for pronounciation would be to use only the letters that actually appear in the word to generate the pronounciation. Chop -ress from sorceress and you get sorce, like force with an 's'. Add an 's' to Orc and you get sorc. Thus the "sork" version would win because the version I commonly see spelled out is "sorc" not "Sorce".

There's a whole song about that kind of **** in the English language.

    "You say toe-may-toe, I say toe-maw-toe..."

Well said, but I would say "sork" or "sorck" as that's what first comes to mind when you see the abbreviation "sorc."

Knowing that sorc is an abbreviation for sorceress I would say "Source". If I was oblivious of the fact that it was a short form for sorceress I would probably say "sorck".

When I see "sorc" on the screen I think "Sorck", and it seems logical to me to pronounce it that way because there is not an "e" on the end. If everyone typed "sorce" then I would say/hear it the other way.

Isn't it great that we can have silly arguments with our friends about correct pronunciation? I mean, the world would be a sad place if everyone agreed all the time.

I'd say Sorck as source sounds like a work in its own right rather than an abbreviation.

    Likewise.

    I voted Sorck.

Bahrb (Bah Bah), Zawn, ***-in (If you abbreviate it as 'assn'), Pal-ee, Neck

I say "source," because that's how you say the word it abbreviates. Saying it as "sork" doesn't make any sense as it has no relevance to the original word. You don't call doctors "durs" because the abbreviation is "Dr," now do you?
