    Solipsism.

    Solipsism.

I don't usually lend my mind to one particular train of thought, as that is generally a HUGE waste of time.

(see: Political Alignment and Organized Religion; AKA the ways of thinking that should be prefaced by, "So, you'd like everyone to be annoyed when you speak?" or "So, you want to start a war?")

But I do find this way of thinking to be awfully interesting. Worthy of an off-topic caliber thread.

    Re: Solipsism.

As a figment of my imagination, I would like to thank you for reminding me of what I have known all my life: That I am totally awesome for thinking up all this music, all these movies, and all the hilarious and heinous events I pretend to experience through all of these technological masterpieces I've concocted in my own head. I haven't had as much luck thinking up other people, but some of you have turned out a'ight.

Also, since you are a creation of my own mind, your minions, by extension, are, in fact, MY minions.

solipsism is a weak position. Nothing more than a theory. Bring along an ounce of common sense and you will see its worthless.

solipism is a very strong position if you're ignorant enough.

    And I wouldn't say it's a theory... rather a hyopthesis.

It, Like most philosophies, is interesting, yet not really realistic.

I don't see how it's anymore ridiculous than thinking there's a god scrutinizing every move we make, and that seems to have a pretty strong foothold in modern society.

    Re: Solipsism.

    Solipsism can be defined as:
First it lacks falsifiability, i.e, how can we verify that everything is a figment of our imagination, and if it isn't, what proves it? I am not trying to deny that we have our own thoughts, feelings, ways of reasoning and way of making abstractions; I do not however, think that there's any justification for us thinking this way since it is completely superfluous; it does not help explain the world; it's nature, it's pretty much useless for anything expect mindgames.

    ad populum :(

    Re: Solipsism.

Sonata, i think you should meet Bestest Friend. i think you two might possibly get along.... altho, i don't think she believes in Solipsism. she just thinks everyone else is retarded and has no brain.

i have no doubt other people's minds exist but each one is diff in their way of thinking. this (for some reason) reminds me of the time that one kid try to convince Marahumm that a pen no longer existed because it was in his bag and Mara had no sense of it, therefore it did not exist..... he was a bit of an odd fellow.

    Re: Solipsism.

@ Rawness: I mean, I really CAN'T prove you exist. Even if you were standing next to me. There's no "Existence Meter" that gauges if someone or something exists. I mean, for all Christians know, this(earth) could be Purgatory.

Like I said, I just think it's a very interesting train of thought. It also has the same chances of being 'correct' as any other religion.

@Leo: I think that kid watched too much "What the BLEEP do we know?" haha In that movie, they say if something is outside of your field of vision, then it can exist anywhere. But once you look at, say, a bench, it 'appears' to be there because your mind knows(or thinks) that that is where the bench 'should' be.

Very strange movie. Amazing to just sit down and watch by yourself... don't try to entertain a crowd with it.... Trust me.

    Re: Solipsism.

hahaha, got it. ;) yeah, he tried to pull that with Marahumm and he was like, "Dude, if i reach into your little knapsack, it's going to be there. The pen exists!"

maybe for some of us this is hell and others feel this is heaven. our human minds can't compute such knowledge of higher things.

Well, I look around at what goes on in the world and I just don't think I want to take created for having created that in my mind. I'd like to think that the things my mind would create would make a little more sense to me.

    Re: Solipsism.

No, it's actually true that nothing can be proven but one's own self. Solipsism is being convinced that it is like that, not just that it might be possible.

I think I already put this elsewhere
but it fits so well here I'm posting it again.

Sorry it's a bit big but it does fit right in OT.
    All there is, is Us.
Kind of expands the traditional definition of Solipsism.
    Or does it?
All depends on your current viewpoint I guess?
And that always changing even if the above is not true.
So what can you be sure of...
just the now that you live moment by moment?

Bravo. Very very interesting. I like seeing people think outside the box of "Ideas" they're fed since they were born.

Quite an interesting read, to be sure. :)
