socketing ?

i'm trying too see if there's a way of increasing my chances in getting a specific number of sockets, say just three on my sup mageplate or 4 on an eth polearm. is it totally random if you cube it and usually max number with larzuk. any way to increase the chance of getting a specific number? i'm mainly concerned about normal, non-magical stuff... thanks!

Re: socketing ?

as u said: larzuk gives u maximum and cube socketing is random (as for as "white" and "grey" items).so:

1. larzuk - u just need to now qlvl of item and then u know exactly how many sockets u will get

2. other: u have to know qlvl and maximum sockets.cubing is random.i dont recommned u to use it e.g. for monarch if u need exactly 4s for spirit, cause monarch is quite rare. also isnt socketable item with ed via cube. classical case of using cube is when u need 3s armor for example.as for number of sockets:

- game calculating 1-6 (maximum sockets possible in game) every time!
- if u try to socket some items with 4 as maximum of sockets in case of 5 and 6 (random roll) it will be changed to 4. so e.g. armor with maximum sockets 4 has 3/6 probability of getting 4 sockets. just in cases like this is bigger chance to get specific number...so other example: if u want to cube grim shield with maximum of 2 sockets probability is:
1/6 for 1 socket
5/6 for 2 sockets

Re: socketing ?

Isn't there a cube recipe that you can use on an item to lower it's qlvl before you Larzuk it to make sure you get 3 sockets instead of 4+? I've heard of it before, but I can never seem to remember the details of it. :/

Also, if that's true, does it work on paladin shields, or do they get 4os no matter what?

Yes... I used it once, because I found a cracked (or whatever) Archon Plate, and I set it's lvl to 1 to restrict the sockets. I had plans to make a nice little Smoke out of it =p

lemme dig up the recipe info:
1 Eld Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Weapon = Normal Quality Weapon of same type
ilvl = 1. That is, regardless of what the ilvl was beforehand, it will be set to 1.

1 El Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Armor = Normal Quality Armor of same type
ilvl = 1. That is, regardless of what the ilvl was beforehand, it will be set to 1.

Edit: I too would like someone to pipe in about the Paladin shield, if they know for sure. My first guess would be that ALL pally shields get 4 sockets, no matter what. But then again, I really wonder if the qLvL on pally shields you find screwing around in Act1 Norm would somehow restrict down the socket# a little.... doesn't seem right that you could literally take the first shield you find on your lvl1 char outside in the Blood Moor, put it in stash til Act5, and then suddenly punch 4 sockets in it and have a Hell-capable resists shield or a Spirit. I feel like I am missing something on that one :O

Aww, I guess that would only work if you found a low quality item, you couldn't just use the cube to make a normal item qlvl 1. :/

As for the lvl 1 on Blood Moor pally shield thing, it wouldn't be too badly broken since the resists would be really low since the good stats don't show up till higher ilvls.

But at the same time, in Normal mode (around lvl25) you aren't having problems with your resists... not even thru all of NM either. Yet if you truly can punch 4os into any Pally shield (I have to admit I've never tried it to see if it's true), then you can immediately wear dual Spirits for massive amounts of +skills, FHR, FCR, added Vit and Mana, and some resists on top to boot.

Every other char has to wait until much later in the game to even start finding suitable Monarchs, much less figuring out how they are gonna cope with that much Str to wear it =p

p.s. I still have this nagging feeling that the very lowest qLvL Pally Shields would not socket 4os from Larzuk, but I could be very wrong as well. I've just never been tempted to try it to find out for sure.
