Socketing a shield...

Hey all,

As you can see in my other thread, I am back to playing. Last time I stranded in the Chaos Sanctuary with LoewieJunior, my level 27 paladin. I had no trouble clearing the way through the River of Flame and everything before that, and I scared the living crap out of poor Duriel, but nevertheless, the Chaos Sanctuary was deadly.

But today I finally bit the bullet, and showed Diablo what I am made of. Now I am in Act V and I just had Larzuk throw some sockets in a peculiar shield I was using.

Now my question is: what should I put in, in order to make something decent without a crazy level requirement. The low level requirement is what makes this shield so special, and I don't want to lose that. Any ideas?

If you're on the ladder, you can make the runeword Spirit using Tal+Thul+Ort+Amn. It's a pretty impressive runeword considering the low runes it utilizes. If you're not on the ladder, there's no runewords for any 4-socket shields that don't use Vex (I refer, of course, to Exile). Here's the stats for Spirit, just in case:

2 To All Skills
+25-35% Faster Cast Rate (varies)
+55% Faster Hit Recovery
+250 Defense Vs. Missile
+22 To Vitality
+89-112 To Mana (varies)
Cold Resist +35%
Lightning Resist +35%
Poison Resist +35%
+3-8 Magic Absorb (varies)
Attacker Takes Damage of 14

Right, haven't thought about Spirit... It's cheap, and I definately like the +2 to Skills and +22 to Vitality (as I'm exclusively playing HC).

Yeah, good idea. Any thoughts on what the level requirement would be on that if I make it in my shield?

Welcome back. Nice to see your avatar again

IIRC, the level req for runewords is either the req of the shield or the req of the highest rune, whichever is higher. Amn has a req of 25...

Another option would be putting 4 pdiamonds into it, giving you a shield with +110 allres which will solve any res problems until end of nightmare, but I guess your L27 paladin doesn't have über items like these yet. However, the same might be true for the Spirit runes you don't get from Larzuk: Thul and Amn.

I'll probably go for Spirit, since it's nice to have something else than just resistances as well. And don't worry, I like to play untwinked characters now and then, but this one has joined the dark side already: I didn't find that shield with him. So I can certainly afford Spirit, and luckily my gem mule was one of those 6 characters still alive: I think I have some pdiamonds stashed away there.

snowieken,

I made a Spirit shield out of a 4 sock monarch I found a while ago. It's pretty sweet. I use it on my lvl 76 Trap Assn and it gives me a nice boost to my resists since I have almost 0 resists in hell. I would go for the Spirit runeword since it's cheap and yields decent mods for its price.

Darnit! Just when I was about to make Spirit, I've noticed my rune mule is indeed expired. Highest runes I have in my possession are three Orts. I also have a Tal. So I can either cube those Orts up to a Thul, but then I'm left without an Ort as well.

Oh well, I'll find them. Gonna pay the Countess lots of visits the coming days. Thanks for the tips, guys!
