    Socketables -- which to keep

I am playing through hell difficulty and finding quite a few 4-6 socket weapons. Which are the ones I should be holding on to and which should I just leave. Just found a 6 socket crystal sword - is it worth keeping?? No E.D. just normal -- are these things that would be good to up or just get rid of??

Hard to name all potentialy useful socketed weapons. The best way to decide to keep it or to leave is visit the Arreat Summit runeword page, and look if there's a runeword that can be made in this items.
Let's do it with a sword: 6S sword is suitable for Silence (not bad for a caster, but in 1.10 HotO is cheaper and better), BotD and Last Wish. Noone will ever make last 2 in a Crystal sword. Throw it away, man.
Anyway, Normal weapons have use only in Spirit (4S swords), HotO (4S Flail) and Call to Arms (5S weapon). There's hardly any use for other Normal weapons. Exceptionals are pretty much useless - no damage for combat runewords, too high requirements for caster runewords. If you find a socketed Elite, is it useful or not - you need to lok at the runewords.
Watch for Ethereal mod on socketed items. It can ruin one item, but it can rise the value of another item. Ethereal is potentialy very good for Polearms (for A2 mercenary) and weapons that are suitable for runewords with Indestructible mod (BotD, Eternity, etc).

Normal (non-ethereal) weapons with the maximum number of possible sockets (6 in the case of your crystal sword) are usually worthless. Such items are very easy to come by because all you have to do is find a plain one in a sufficiently high level area (late nm and beyond, generally) and take it to Larzuk. Bam, max sockets very easily.
