Socket an item

I've heard that you can put an extra socket into an item using a soj and other items in the cube. just like the socket quest but instead it costs you a soj. Can anybody confirm this and if so could i possibly have the cuve recipe for this please? It would be of great help, thanks.

The following cube recipes with a stone of jordan work:

Transmute Formula 3 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item + Stone of Jordan = Add 1 Socket To a Rare Item
Rare Items can only have two sockets. You cannot add sockets to items that don't normally have sockets. You can not use this on a Rare with one socket. You can only add one socket to to a zero socket Rare Item.

Transmute Formula 1 Perfect Skull + 1 Rare Item + Stone of Jordan = 1 High Quality New Rare Item of the same type
This formula has the possibility of creating a higher quality Rare Item than the following formula. ilvl = int(.66 * clvl) + int(.66 * ilvl) That is, the ilvl will be equal to .66 times your clvl (rounded down) plus .66 times the input item's ilvl (also rounded down).
As described on the official guide here:

http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml

Only adds to a rare item if that item can get a socket and only to a max of two sockets.

Ahhh thank you v much for that info, well it seems i misunderstood what you could actually socket using a soj... I wanted to try and put another socket in my almost perf coa save the lack of the 2nd socket. Thanks for the info anyway.

The recipe will only add 1 socket to an unsocketed rare. I don't know where you got the max of two thing, but it's wrong.

Kinda related - If I socket gulliam's face in the socket quest, will it have one or 2 sockets?

To an unsocketed rare, unique, or set item, the socket quest will give one socket.

To an unsocketed magic item, the socket quest will give 1 or 2 sockets (equal chance). If the base type can get a max of 1 socket, then 1 socket will be given.

To an unsocketed white item, the socket quest will give the max sockets for the items ilvl.

To a socketed item, nothing will happen.
