So where's my college fund?

Garbad, I get the point that you lack some human compassion and you like to show it.
I find that incredibly amusing coming from you since you have more than once shown your utter lack of compassion for those less fortunately than you, for example a few threads on the homeless are the first to come to mind. Then again I am "damaged" so maybe I misinterpreted you saying that homeless people wanted to be homeless and are a bunch of liars. Where is your compassion there?

Re: So where's my college fund?

I can't believe a counselor would say such a thing, they are supposed to be there to help students succeed. What a shmuck. I am glad your wife ignored that terrible advise, people will succeed if they have the drive to do so. It sounds like she is a perfect example of that.
Thanks Wuff, Yeah it was the early 1970s then and she (my future wife) was one of about 8 Mexican-American Students at the time at Santa Ana High School (now a 90's % Mexican-American area and before anyone asks her family were legal immigrants) I think it was in reality a inspiring if stupid comment from the counselor as it motivated her to prove them wrong.

Re: So where's my college fund?

Is anyone else mad as hell that you don't have a college fund because your family thinks it's acceptable to work towards saving up your own? Man, do they realize how much university costs? I'm going to be working for maybe 10-20 years to fulfull my goals. That's bullcrap!

Please post your bitter story here. I'll start with mine.

So here I am with my Neuroscience degree which is a completely useless degree unless I upgrade it to a masters, PhD, or or use it to get into med school, none of which I can afford. It is almost a complete waste to get such a degree unless you have the cash to take it to the extremes you need for a job in that field. Btw, I suffered and starved through University and made nice marks even without being able to afford half my books or internet. That's bull**** right there.

Please do not have any children unless you have their college fund already sitting there in the bank or else you will feel their wrath when they are 29 like me and unable to start their career. I'm going to be 50 or w/e and I'll be just getting my foot in the door! That's BULL****!!

You know what my cheapass degree is good for? Posting on the OT forum.

Anyway, is anyone else mad as hell?
blame government subsidised cheap student loans that create incentives for colleges to be more expensive, and the federal reserve, which distorts the market and increases the presence of loans compared to what a free market would supply, thus increasing the probable costs of tuition even more.

We could do that you libertarian red neck, or we could blame the collages for charging as much money as they know people will pay (free market)

The "free market" is not more efficient per default.

I'm not surprised - I went to a state school in a poor and largely non-white area, about 90% of the kids at my school were first or second generation from the Indian Sub-Continent region. Our graduation guest speaker gave the most patronizing speech I have ever received basically telling a story that implied that everyone (bear in mind that 10% of this class had confirmed places at Oxford or Cambridge and about 40% had confirmed places at one of the top 10 universities in the UK with most people going to study Medicine, Law, Engineering or Accountancy) that they should expect a life of applying for dead end jobs in the local business park but they should work hard... and maybe one day they would get a lucky break and a mediocre promotion which they should be grateful for.

On the other hand my girlfriend at the time went to a private international school, at her graduation speech the guest speaker went on to them that they were the future world leaders and with that they carry the responsibility to lead well.

Re: So where's my college fund?

After reading some of these posts I'm somehow glad I wasn't born in the US!
As my family's economic situation is not the best either, I also don't have enough money, to pay my studies in the University but here in Europe there's a lot more "support"(loans:whistling:) it seems, I should be taking a loan of 30000€ next week or so for a three year course...

Somehow I'm not even worried, I know that if I am successful it'll be easy for me to pay this loan and all I have to do is study study study.

Re: So where's my college fund?

I grew up in the middle of the woods with no running water or power. I bet you even had real windows instead of plastic wrap over empty spaces so don't get all whiney and *****y about how tough life is. There are such things as grants you can apply for to help cover some costs. You say you have a job, if that isn't enough then pick up another one or find one that pays better. I worked full time and went to school full time. I didn't need anyone to pay my way. Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

You get zero sympathy here.
You had plastic wrap in empty spaces?? You lucky bastard! When I grew up, we had to use leaf to fill empty holes in the house. If there where a strong wind, my father made us use our bodies to cover the holes better, so that he could get some sleep so ha was rested when he had to go to work. And he worked 20 hours a day, so he better get his sleep.

We had to burn the leaves to stay warm the first winter.

Man you had it rough though, at least we didn't have to plug the windows with ourselves!

Note: I am not actually complaining about that time of my life. I lived it, it is over, I moved on. I took a lot of positive lessons from it. I mean that is part of life, learning from the experiences.

I suppose cheap government loans could be driving up prices, but honestly, I think all loans (cheap or not, government or not) drive up the prices for anything, really.

(I wonder how cheap some things would be if credit wasn't legal. Not saying it should be illegal. Just wondering . . . )

Good god , studying in the US sucks :/.

This really does make me appreciate having a high end uni 10 minutes down the road costing an "expensive " 6k a year - books.

So many other links in the supply chain depend on credit that I'm sure everything would actually be considerably more expensive.

My tuition for my undergraduate degree was right around 6k a year.

Which one is it, may I ask? I'll be going to Delft this year.

AeroJonesy, I think he means overall cost. I'm going to pay 1620€ / year and about 8.5k€ overall costs.

Nevermind college fund, where's my fund for buying undetectable custom essays giving me an automatic 2:1 for half my course? Life sucks:coffee:

As long as I complete uni sucessfully with a 2:2 or better, my debt should be very managable studying in the UK, assuming the economy's in a situation where I can get a job I'm not overqualified for.

Just look up essays in english on the internet then translate it over to your language and pass that off as your own. All the google-fu in the world wont detect that one.

Re: So where's my college fund?

College must be expensive for you young ones.

I remember tuition was $400 per semester 1st year. Then by the 4th year, it was ~$1700. I spent about $5-6K on my degree.

Now I sit next to coworkers who attended Stanford for $60k/year.

$100-200K student loan isn't that bad. That's about $1500/month of payments. If you make around $120k/year you should do fine. If you make less than $50k/year with a college degree, you're doing something wrong. Go work at Starbucks or something.

Much like just about everyone else on the internet, you are exaggerating. The real numbers show well over half of the people with bachelor's degrees earn less than 50k a year. And note that is people over 25, which means they have a few years of experience at least (not recent grads).

At $70k, payments are $800/month. At $200k, that'd be closer to $3000/month. That's for the 10 year repayment plan. I guess you'd get close to $1500/month on the 30 year plan, but that's still a ton of money.

Bachelor's aren't worth much anymore. Now that everyone goes to college.

But I hope you aren't including Bachelor of Arts in that, because those don't count. Ditto Philosophy, Theology, Business and all those other worthless degrees.
