So where's my college fund?

Is anyone else mad as hell that you don't have a college fund because your family thinks it's acceptable to work towards saving up your own? Man, do they realize how much university costs? I'm going to be working for maybe 10-20 years to fulfull my goals. That's bullcrap!

Please post your bitter story here. I'll start with mine.

So here I am with my Neuroscience degree which is a completely useless degree unless I upgrade it to a masters, PhD, or or use it to get into med school, none of which I can afford. It is almost a complete waste to get such a degree unless you have the cash to take it to the extremes you need for a job in that field. Btw, I suffered and starved through University and made nice marks even without being able to afford half my books or internet. That's bull**** right there.

Please do not have any children unless you have their college fund already sitting there in the bank or else you will feel their wrath when they are 29 like me and unable to start their career. I'm going to be 50 or w/e and I'll be just getting my foot in the door! That's BULL****!!

You know what my cheapass degree is good for? Posting on the OT forum.

Anyway, is anyone else mad as hell?

I'll bite back on my... more colourful responses. Why should they have done so? What the HELL do they owe you, emo-boy? Whining about how unfair life is because you haven't had your nest feathered? Get some perspective, for Christ's sake.

No, that's life. I didn't get my Masters until I was close to 40, and I'm still having to get stupid piddling certifications to prove my worth. It's part of the game I bought into, and the same thing is true for you.

Sounds like someone should have taken a degree with more utility, or minored in something you could feed yourself with.
Anyway, is anyone else mad as hell?
Well, yes. I'm mad that half of my retirement savings has "bought" a hell of a lot of Hopeychange and nothing else. Furthermore, I'm going to have to look at converting what little cash I had been saving for my son's education into something like gold so that THE ONE's devaluation power-grab won't turn it into toilet paper.

Re: So where's my college fund?

What do you think whose fault it is ? Didn't you know that in advance ? If you didn't, why not ?

If you want to have a well-paid job, decide for a proper profession first, then check if you can afford the money and time which is needed to learn it. Then learn it. You did things in the wrong order, so you should better be mad about yourself instead of those who haven't told you study neuro-science.

A few things aren't just a matter of talent. How many neuro-scientists does your country need ? If it's so tough to learn it, the reason might be that society can afford to take just the top 5% while all the rest might end up in different jobs, so being let's say among the top 20% or not having the very best kind of college degree isn't enough. Even then, getting a job is often a matter of good relations in such a situation. If nobody speaks to your favour, you will get no job, no matter how good you are. That's life.

Jesus Christ, what a dick. I bet you *****ed when your dad only bought you a new corolla instead of a hummer, too.

Take out a loan or get a job like the rest of us.

Lol, I wonder if he'll respond to his own thread after all of that?

Edit: By the way, Stillman, do you have any idea how taxi drivers and custodians have degrees? **** happens. Just because you have a degree, doesn't mean you're going to work in your field of choice.

I pay more per month in student loans this year than I paid in rent last year...

You guys seem to know a lot about my deceased father. He drank himself to death and left his three kids with nothing. We all deserve a fighting chance in this world. I AM entitled.

Garbad, I DO have a student loan and I DO work like the rest of you. What I'm saying is all that is not enough.

Just to make it clear, I meant to offer constructive criticism. I hope that's not confused with the cruel insults and rude comments which a few others made here.

Don't forget Dupe: be a sexxay chick and tend bar (or worse, thus ripping off stupid male frosh types). :girly:

I didn't get through entirely on my own; my grandparents had bought some bonds and my Mom got a Gov't stipend in addition to money I had earned starting at age 13. I still had to work during education; the military pays $100+ a month or more.

If the topic had been, "Feckin' money-grubbing libtard kollege kampus klowns" then I might expect the reaction would have been far less hostile. Colleges have no legitimate reason for their tuition charges.

That would require work...he is ENTITLED to everything.

Did you have this attitude when your father was alive?

State schools are pretty close. But private schools are ridiculous. Why pay three times as much to have someone teach you out of the same books you'd use at a state school?

WAAAAHMBULANCE
They don't owe you anything. Get over your sense of entitlement.

(FYI, I paid for all of my college myself, and the only break I got came from the college itself because of my high school grades. Suck it up.)

That depends on what the degree gets you. Especially with a terminal degree, some schools can greatly enhance your employability and prestige. But for an undergrad or for a person who doesn't have some serious ambitions and a willingness to work 80 hours a week a state school makes much more sense. And there are a lot of excellent schools out there that are cheap.

Those schools are pretty good about giving out need-based aid, though. And merit-based aid. The Harvards of the world are heavy into price discrimination, the rich legacies pay for the good students. If you get into one of those, you're generally going to get some help. It's the middle-of-the-road private schools that just aren't worth the bucks, especially if you are paying your own way.

Yup. People sure do put a lot of emphasis on those expensive as hell pieces of paper, don't they? Way too much if you ask me.

But that's the way it goes I guess.
