yup, anyone can sign up now to facebook by registering in their region. Maybe another step towards myspace? I dont know yet. Facebook has been anticipating a lot of objection from the college/high school community so they have implemented advanced privacy controls.

So far, I think facebook is going pretty well so far. It's very simple and straightforward.. only one ad banner and no html or other coding (unlike myspace). But I still disagree with their decision to be open to the public. The last thing we need is to see is a girl gone missing in the news after contacting a stranger on facebook.

Any thoughts? Do you think this is a good or bad move for facebook? And if you couldn't create a facebook before, do you think you'll create one now?

I have a facebook account, never used it tho. It should have stayed as a community for college/high school students. It looks like they're just trying to imitate myspace now (without all the html of course).

I'd prefer that it stay a college/high school deal. But I'm afraid, as our market economy works, that pressure from advertisers lead to this change....hopefully it will be for the better.

I spend a lot of time on my facebook account, so we'll see...

Even after fifty of these facebook or myspace threads, I STILL don't understand what those sites are supposed to do.

I have asked people who have literally spent 8 continuous hours on each site, and they still haven't given me a real answer.

I have a Myspace, and I'm not a big fan, basically use it to communicate with long distance family and people I work with.

Facebook on the other hand is great, hard to explain it to someone who doesn't use it. It's not so much for 'meeting people' as it is for keeping in touch with people you've already met.

MySpace (which I've never tried) is pretty creepy IMO.
Facebook, on the otherhand, is much more secure (at least it was) since you had to be a colleg student to sign up for it, and there are quite a few privacy controls in place to make it less like MySpace.

As has been said, Facebook is a cool way to keep in contact with people. With all the recent updates, it is actually a lot like a forum, except far more complex.

But yeah, you'd have to try it to really see what it is all about. Though, I dont' see how people can spend hours on the site. I get bored after 20 minutes. Then again, my wife wonders how I can spend hours on the OTF, and she doesn't understand when I try to explain that one to her either ;-)

I use email for that.

email isn't really organized. You'll most likely forget to keep in contact with old friends sometimes.

social sites such as facebook gives you a much broader picture of people you know.

If the only way you keep in contact with someone is via Facebook/Myspace, I'd say you're not really friends.

Now, why doesn't that come as a surprise?
By choice rather than by necessity. I make friends really easily, I just never keep up with them.

I don't really see the point of friends. I mean, you can't have sex with them, so why bother? I'm like a dog; if I can't eat it, **** it, piss on it - or some combination of those - I don't see the point of it.

Well you can't eat the OTF and you aren't ****ing it. . .so you must be pissing on it.

I'm not a fan. In fact, this thread has reminded me to go an revise my security settings pretty heavily. I've got to change my pics and such too since I plan on doing some job applications in a few months (stopping self from ranting so as not to hijack thread).
