Snipes Gets 3 Years for Tax Evasion

Wesley Snipes copped a three year prison sentence for three tax evasion charges.

There's something odd about this, I can't quite put my finger on it at almost 4am...

Must be because he's black. As white people don't have to pay tax.

I don't see anything odd about being sent to jail for not paying taxes. It happens in the USA all the time. In fact, I have three neighbors who are doing time for the same thing. It's also the ONLY crime that ever put the infamous criminal, Al Capone, in jail. Not paying your taxes is against the law.
So, in other words,,,,, don't piss off the IRS !!!

I heard this on the Radio today.

The judge chose to enact the Maximum penalty, because he is a star and wanted to make an example of him.

Thousands of people cheat on their taxes here. when they get caught it almost always penalties and fines. Never jail time.

Cheating on their taxes is different from just not paying them. You would have to prove that they intentionally cheated, not just that they are morons. Not paying them at all, well, the intent is much easier to prove.

My father-in-law wrote bad checks to pay his sales taxes (business owner), wrote 3 checks for a total of 6000.00. Eventually cost him 75,000 with interest and penalties. Stupid man.

But that was state not federal.

Yeah, I've sorta followed the Snipes Tax thing for some time and heard the ruling yesterday myself.

It seems Snipes is involved in a movement that is against taxes - this group reportedly advises people that they can "protest" taxes as unconstitutional and that it's not illegal.

It would seem they (and Snipes) are wrong.

Taxes are a necessary evil. Now... how much taxes they take is an area for debate of course...

Yes they claim that the amendment? that gives the government the right to collect taxes was'nt properly ratified and so is not valid.

So for purely patriotic reasons they tried not to pay their taxes and after fighting it for 3 years it's now time to face the hammer of justice. Nice try though.

This sentence is for just a few of the many, many charges he initially had against him. The bulk of the really serious ones were dropped. I seem to recall several charges of conspiracy etc.

The odd thing about this is the fact that a celebrity (and a black one at that) actually got the same sentence that you and I would have gotten.

Are you kidding? The only reason he got the maximum allowable sentence was because he was a celebrity and they felt like making an example out of him. You or I probably wouldn't have even received any jail time.

Of course we would. Defiantly oppose the collection/paying of your taxes for a couple years, and see if you don't go to jail.

All the felony charges were dropped, he was only convicted on the 3 misdemeanor accounts of tax evasion. Your average citizen is going to pay a heavy fine, get put on probation, and probably do some community service, but they won't go to jail.

Here is another recent public figure that I can remember who received no jail time for 2 counts of misdemeanor tax evasion.

Re: Snipes Gets 3 Years for Tax Evasion

I thought he fled the country to avoid getting charged for tax evasion. Did I hear that right? For some reason I recall a few months ago hearing that he had left the states and went to Europe to avoid the IRS. Maybe that didn't help his case either.

Glad they got him for it, and not me, not that I do that, but they need to do this more in high profile cases, not less.
I would like to know what assets he had, and were his money went...
I know its harsh but I don't see much else they would do if they doing the job right.
Let me know what happened and was it all him or something else?
