    smiter question...

I'm new to smiters and have a noobish question... what makes exile shield the best for a smiter paladin? Actually, what gives smite it's damage? Is it the defense of the shiled that makes it such an effective smiter shield? Thanks!

    Re: smiter question...

Every shield has base smite damage. Holy shield and +damage (Grief, astreon's, redeemer) also add onto smite damage, although the latter is not displayed on the LCS. Smite is also affected by auras such as might, conc, fanat and stuff like HoW. Strength is also affected, as well as off-weapon ED. (I think that's pretty much it.)

Exile is NOT always the best smiter shield. It's quite bm and has lower damage than a HoZ.

i found a 4 os sacred targe i think it is with about 150 base def and +40 to all resists..would it be completely useless to make exile in this? i know its not eth but I'm non-ladder and those bugged eth exiles are really expensive. Just wondering if this would affect the damage my smiter does? thanks!

it wouldn't affect damage. but your defense will be significantly lower than an eth version =)

    Re: smiter question...

For PvM, exile's advantage is survivability (massive life tap % + defiance aura), and its main disadvantage is the lack of resists.

For PvP, as UberB stated, it's massively BM. Don't use it.

If you want damage on your smiter, go with Grief as weapon. With Grief, damage from your shield is almost negligeable. Except if you use HoZ: the +4 combat skills on it gives a nice boost to smite dmg.

That targe would be fine for exile... But an eth on would be better (although not necessary). I personally would make Spirit from it since I'm not much of an exile fun... A smiter rarely has survivability problems in PvM. You want more resists from your shield slot. And 3 hrs isn't worth it IMO for the bonuses it provides.

thanks for the responses...This char is strictly PvM and I will want him 2 be able to solo Uber Tristam. What do you guys mean when u say for PvP it's BM? Also, i'm non-ladder so i cannot make that spirit :(

In PVP BM=Bad Manors, and to most the ctc lifetap makes it BM, when life tap kicks in the smiter can almost not die.

The high defense is also really annoying to barbs. Nothing on defiance, but when you factor in eth bugged shield, it gets out of hand.

    Re: smiter question...

It's easy for any smiter to solo Uber Tristam. All you need is a fast enough smite with decent damage, crushing blow, open wounds, and some source of life tap (charges from wand or marrows are enough. If you add Dracs on top of that as I do, you'd have no problem at all).

Resists (especially stacked) are overrated IMO... but I'll test that in game in a week or so (exams first) and get back to you on that :)

Max resists in hell + fade from treachery is enough for me. No need to do all those stupid calculations.

If you don't mind getting 1 shot ko'ed by mephisto, then sure, don't get any resists stuff.

73 all resistance is -52 after mephis conviction. Depending on how much life you have, i'd say you have been lucky.
