Slightly OT: Explain this scam to me

Not sure where else to turn for help here, but this is technically the only "Blizzard community" I've ever been a part of.

So here's what's happening: I get an email from blizzard saying
"Hello Jimmy, you've requested to change your associated bnet email to <my email address> click here to confirm changes.

So what the hell: my name isn't jimmy and I obviously didn't come out of semi retirement just to send an email to blizzard for such an odd request....so I'm just trying to remember the manner in which I would get screwed if I authorized? WTF is the point to such a scam? anyone can make a new email addy.....

And another thing, is there any recourse? could I track the user who is mining for email addresses and sending this nonsense to blizz?

Or should I just delete and carry on like nothing happened?

Regards.

Re: Slightly OT: Explain this scam to me

my opinion is delete it and move on. like, tell Elly or something, but i've gotten a couple of scams like that as well and i delete it, ask a mod what was up with that and why i got something like that (when i have never been on bnet or whatever) and move on. a mod or one of the admins might be more help than me, tho. heh-heh. >.>

It's a phishing email.

Delete it and don't follow any links in the email.

Likely from goldsellers or some other scammer type trying to get ahold of your account, the mine them off of the internet, I get them for games I don;t even play andon emails not associated with my account.

Delete and move on.

Oh an Leo, telling Elly or one of us won't help because we can't do anything about other than warn that it's a scam and not to click any links, etc, etc.

Re: Slightly OT: Explain this scam to me

Likely what would happen if you click that link is you'd be taken to some specious website that looks like an official Blizzard page, likely with some pseudo-official name like blizzardaccounts.com or batttle.net, which of course is not an official page at all.

You'd be asked to "confirm" or cancel the email change, and then ask you to verify by entering your username and password. Of course, the website is just a front and now they have your password and account and can raid your chars.

They're not after addresses, they obviously have those already, they're after dumb people with bnet accounts :)

Well, gents....

I appreciate the replies and I'm glad I didn't spaz out and click anything (just to see what happened).

I look forward to meeting with you guys on the eve of 2015 when Diablo 3 finally comes out.

I just hope some of D2s oddball equipment makes the cut (like Bul Kathos' Children hahaha) and that barbs can still wear full plate armor AND winged slayer guard helmets...what can I say, it's a good look!

Peace!

In hotmail you can check who sent the mail , by right clicking on the sender in your inbox , then "view message source" this gives all the information you need including the real sender :)

Not sure how this works in anything other than hotmail though , probably the same .

I still get WoW phishing @mails even though I've quit it some 12 months ago.
