    Sleep

No, not the act, the grainy stuff in your eyes when you wake up. I realized recently that when I was younger I had a bunch of it when I woke up, but that now I only have trace amounts of it. Does this happen to everyone as they age? What exactly is it? Why does it only form when your eyes are closed for hours?

Yeah, I don't get it much anymore either.

It's grit left in your eyes by the Sandman.

It goes by many names. It's the gunk left over from dried tears. Kids eyes water more than adults so they have more in the morning. You should save it in a jar. When it's full, sell it on ebay

I usually have more of it around my eyes when I've been crying during my sleep, but usually, I don't get that many crumbs around my eyes.
Sometimes it's bits and bobs from make up I forgot to remove.

It doesn't form much during the daytime because you're blinking and aware (subconsciously rubbing stuff away from your eyes and all). At night tears seep into one place, evaporate, and leave the kibble behind.

Yeah. It happens. And I rather have it in my sleep and not remember much of it than at work, were this happened a couple of times (luckily after I explained people understood, but I really try to avoid it, bursting into tears is embarrassing, for myself and for the people around me who don't know where to look or what to say)

Well, I still have it more from time to time, espescially when I've had a bad night / less sleep.

It already starts to form when I'm feeling tired from time to time, sometimes hours before I go to bed and I'm exhausted.

I've let tears dry on my face as well, the stuff that remains behind after evaporation (little white crystals, tastes very salty) is completely different than the stuff I find around my eyes when I wake up though (weird bigger crystals, different colors can't tell exactly which ones since I'm colorblind but definately not white, no taste / bad taste)

    But it's yellow :\
And the idea of puting salt into my eyes unpleasant. It hurts. Getting sweat in your eyes stings.

you don't rub salt in your eyes, but there's the "salt" that's in tears.
and yellow means it's waste matter.
As Superdave said "eye snot" and that comes pretty close, just it's dry.
