Skilled items any use for Mercs?

Well, the title asks the question....

should i give runewords/+ skill items to mercs or IAS items are the only viable investment?

I do believe that mercs may benefit from +skills from items and runewords, but I am not sure. If you would like solid evidence, head on over to the stickied FAQ thread and you will find the Merc FAQ most helpful.

Mercs benefit from the + to all skills mod. Found on items such as Shako, Andys Visage etc. They will not benifit from + to class skills or specific skill trees as they did in 1.09.

If you are using an Act 2 merc + to all skills will increase the effectiveness of his aura. In most cases you would be better with more IAS as long as it allows you to reach another breakpoint.

skills and ias are not the only things worth having on a mercenary.

Other attributes such as chance to cast static field (cresent moon rune word), slow target (razortine or kelpie snare), open wounds (meat scraper), or crushing blow (hone sundan) just to name a few useful effects happening from your act 2 merc's attacks.

    Although I never did it,

I think in 1.09 if you got enough +skills on an act 1 merc, they had some kind of crazy lightening attack that I think was disabled in 1.10. Anyone know?

yup. +all skills adds to any sk33lz your merc uses.

throw a +2 valor, +4 ariocs and andys visage on your skelliemancers might merc.

Yes, it was the "lightning hose" thing. Not sure about the specifics ... but i'm sure the Ama forum has all that knowledge about it.

Most of the time, my merc acts as a tank, so gear that has damage reduce, life leech, and other things that help keep him alive are usually what I look for. Excellent example would be Vampire Gaze. Crushing blow is always great for end bosses like Baal, so keep that in mind, too.

Yes, in 1.09 Act 1 Rogue after giving her +3 to bow skills (or +3 to all) stopped firing arrows and started casting Diablo’s Lightning attack. It was a bug, that was fixed in 1.10.

let me get something straight: does the +2 to Defensive Aura's from Griswold's Armor no longer work on Act 2 Defiance mercs?

    matt

Compared to Act2Merc auras the Act1 Lightning Hose wasn't that overpowered and it had it's drawbacks.

+2Defensive Aura item will do no good on a Merc in 1.10. A +1All Skills Helm would help him.
