Since when was diablo II horror filled?

Yaknow..I just now realized..I remember every single one of these arguements leveled against some of the improvements that Diablo II had.

People hated so many mass kill spells (blizzard meteor, whirlwind etc)..because it was making the game much easier.

They hated run..as it made the game too fast paced....and nothing could catch you then..as you'd always be faster than the monster.

They hated the overworld....its supposed to be in a dungeon...you are supposed to be lonely.

They hated the origional idea of finding npc's on the battlefield helping you fight. Once again, you are supposed to be alone...this isn't diablo.

And the graphics were too bright...you could see too far, nothing was scary, everything was too bright. Nothing could just leap out and scareyou. And you no longer had to run for your life..or rather walk slowly as you couldn't run.

And the music! It didn't set the mood at all. It should evoke feelings of dread, the current music was almost..happy!

Oh how right they were back then huh?

I played D2 before D1...so run wasnt a new feature for me, walk was HORRENDOUS because of this. I imagine if it was the other way around it would have felt like run was out of place, but since I played D2 first, walk was just seriously terrible haha.

FYI, AOE spells are already out in Diablo, so it wasn't an improvement.

And who the hell would play a game associated with elements like dread, lonely, dark and moody.
Games are meant to be fun and interesting, not to make you feel terrified and depressed.

    Lol. Well remembered.

"And look at the size of the Barbarian? That can't be!"

D2 is indeed much less gloomy and dark than D1. Look at Act 2 & 5. Act 3 is just tropical. Whatever is tropical can be creepy and dark, but not gloomy. Act 1 only is gloomy, it maintains D1 atmosphere.

Run - the single most important feature in D2 in my opinion. I loved the inclusion of run so much, it's hard to put it into words how grateful I was for it.

I STILL think D2 is less than it could be.

D1 > D2; it's just WAY outdated. Doesn't make D2 any less fun; just less "Diablo".

My major gripes were on music and outdoor areas. Still some of the best music around, but it was less creepy than its predecessor. Outdoor areas aren't claustrophobic enough... because, well, they're outdoors.

As far as "mass kill" skills, the fact that there are far more monsters in D2 compensates it well enough.

Being able to run was amazing until I realized that Stamina wasn't drained fast enough and it regenerated too quickly; completely negating the use of "walking". I think in D3, your only (default) movement speed is in-between running and walking.

The scariest part .. in all of diablo was having your items pop off your body.. and looted by others.. NOW WHY DID THEY TAKE THAT FUNCTION AWAY!!!

Umm... because everybody hated it. That is with the exception of a few extreme hardcore players.

People just like to complain for no reason. I played d1 first and then d2. Let me tell you, i loved the improvements and variety that was there. I was sooooo happy for the run button, cause even if i loved d1 trying to catch up with the monsters that were twice as fast as you was soooooo annoying.

Re: Since when was diablo II horror filled?

After playing a lot of D1, the first thing I noticed about D2 was that the graphics were worse. Other than that, I was such a total Blizzard fanboy that I ate up everything about the game.

Let's not forget that D2 instituted realm play that, for the most part made the game more fair and fun to play

I really do think d2 was a better game than d1.
True there was some atmosphere in d1 that d2 didn't really manage to deliver in the same way - and the graphical quality wasn't exactly state of the art in 2000 either - but I've spend a lot more hours playing d2 than d1.
Closed battle.net was obviously the greatest innovation.
I think d3 definitely looks more scary than d2. The evil stuff seems to be more evil - more out to get you.

Whining in anticipation of a game and in a game's starting months is common practice.

Just watch the battlenet forums the month d3 is out: you will be seing more complaints than on the HGL forums

Re: Since when was diablo II horror filled?

The reason the butcher is scarier than the siege breaker is that he looks less like a demon. He's a fat guy with a bloody smock and cleaver that just chopped up 60 - 70 men, women & children. Besides the horns & hooves he looked like my local meat-man. That was pretty horrible.

In D2 you go into a church and see dozens women & children impaled, violated, and dismembered. I was thinking "wtf, can they show that??"

When D3 shows us something as surreal & scary as those, people will stop complaining. And if they remove the green light. And huge shoulder pads

Re: Since when was diablo II horror filled?

i too would put run up there on the list of best improvements, not sure if i would give it first though. other huge improvements to me were

stash, this was great, no more leaving stuff on the ground all over town
gold, 5k stacks of gold max? wasted inv slots. thank god that was gone
FF, anyone who played D1 long enough knew how much FF sucked
constant attack, much better to click and hold to attack, not click 100 times

those were just a few more things that i heard alot of complaints about pre launch for d2. the game had a ton of improvements that were also well met pre launch, like the skill trees
