Should Set Items Return?

Should Set Items Return?

Set items are cool, I remember getting my first set item in D2 1.0. It was a death's sash and I used it till I beat normal because of the "cannot be frozen" mod. Unfortunately, by the time I found the sword and gloves(or whatever the other 2 pieces are) I was level 40 and had no use for them.

This was common for me, for all of us(?), and it was cool to complete a set, seeing all those item names on a list in green and seeing those set bonuses, but your paladin or barbarian was no longer lvl 3 when they would've been useful. So you're left with a backhanded sense of accomplishment, "good job!, too bad it doesn't mean anything!"

Now you can say "why not make a new character?" In D2 that was an option, a painful one, but we all did it, we all made a character to use that cool set just to see if it was worth it. I am guilty of making a polearm barb recently to use Hwannin's...

Alas, Diablo III will have respecs. So we no longer will need(or maybe with limitations we will not as much need) to make a new character if the one we made flops in nightmare or hell difficulties. This leaves less incentive for making a new character just to use a set. Why reroll a character to use a set since the one you have now is stuck, just respec him to something else and push forward.

Perhaps a cool way to impliment psuedo sets could be rares or uniques having synergies. Like your rare sword named "Cruel Slicer" will giveand recieve a bonus to your gloves named "Slicers Grips" because they both contain slicer... it's a thought. Or a Unique named "Wirts Leg" could give/recieve a bonus from your "Large pants of Roomy Comfort". Think about it...you could make your OWN set! Sadly, this would probably require A LOT of work because of all the possible combinations, but wouldn't it be sweet? Setless sets! Ah...to dream...

Re: Should Set Items Return?

I think most people here must have had this problem in some point of their D2 career. But I really want to see set items return. This is because of the extra detail that goes into 3D models of armor and equipment, so the 'unique look' is really unique and not some colour change which may not be too good.(Tal Rasha's comes to mind)

I don't think respecs are going to be allowed too much. What's the fun in trying out all character builds on a single character. It's probably going to be something like Titan Quest, where the first point reallocated costs a meagre 250 gold, but increases exponentially as you keep doing it.

Rest assured. Blizzard is well aware of this problem with set items and is look for a system to make it function better. They aim for you to find the whole while you can still make use of it.
However, they haven't released much about how that system will function. They said that a single monster won't drop all items in one kill. Perhaps they utilise a system where you get increase drop chance if you have found one set item? Who knows?

I liked the set item, and the way i played before is started a new charecter i would farm the gear they needed while i lvld them. I always kept a complete set of the sigon set, which in my opinion was one of the most golfy sets to use lvling. that complete set could last me most the way through NM. Sets are good, infact i hope they do more and a better job with the set items this time around.

Sounds good on paper, but then sets wouldn't be able to have end-game potential because they'd be so easy to farm.

I like the idea of sets, alot. I wish D2 sets were better and harder to find, but it's just something that's really hard to balance I think.

I think a big problem with the only few sets that you could manage through the game with on hell (Tal Rasha's, Immortal King, M'avina's) was that most of the pieces were so easy to find, but you only had one or two pieces that were really rare. Essentially you only actually to look hard for the Tal Rasha's Armor and amulet, everything else was likely sitting on a mule somewhere or could be traded for in seconds. They need to scale this so that sets can be laughably easy to find in their entirety and disgustingly difficult to find each individual part (and everything in between). Random quests could add a lot to the potential for sets too.
