Should people be confident in their own bodies regardless of what shape they're in?

Today I saw a young girl, about 16 or 17, who was very overweight wearing a midriff-baring shirt. This had the result of about 20lbs of flab hanging out in front of her. Now personally I found this rather revolting, as it was not an attractive sight at all. Once I got over that, though, I realized how rare it is for someone, especially at her age, to have that much confidence in their body when they're in that kind of physical shape. At the same time I thought this confidence was going overboard, but that's mostly a personal taste thing because I really don't want to see obese people in a minimum of clothing.

In a related tidbit, I saw an advertisement for a "big person's softball team" that invited "big men, big women and friends and family of big people". It was quite obvious from this ad that "big" was a PC way of saying "fat". But what got me was its catcher line that stated "Come out and support each other and be proud to be big." I thought 'proud to be big?' Since when should people be proud to be overweight and in very poor physical shape? When did this become ok? Last time I checked, physical obesity is a leading cause of health problems in society and there are people out there who are encouraging people to keep their weight on.

Personally, I think it's admirable that the first girl has confidence. At the same time I think it's misplaced. My reasoning is that I equate confidence with acceptance and I don't think anyone should accept being as overweight as she was for their own good. As for the advertisement... well I just think everything about that is wrong.
