    Shields -- defense vs block

I have a question regarding the defense rating vs. block rating of shields. All of the posts/guides I have looked at talk about maximizing the block rating, but don't say anything regarding the defense.

Is there a trade-off calculation between block and defense? E.g. Comparing two random shields. Shield 1 has X% block and Y defense. Shield 2 has X+20% block, but has Y-100 defense. Which is the better shield (or does the comparison not make sense)?

If I've missed a discussion of this, a pointer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

For me at least, on any char that has no +defence modifier - defiance for example, then the def rating on a shield is of no real importance whilst the block rating will affect the amount of dex needed for max block on any char.

and :welcome: to the forums :D.

Defence has little effect as dont forget you have other items providing defence not just the shield.

Unless you're on a high def barb with a lot in Shout and maybe iron resistance, or a pali running multiple auras with defiance in there somewhere to go with the holy shield, def isn't going to be a big deal.

Chance to block is the main factor in choosing a shield - the base chance to block helps dictate how much Dex you'll need to add to improve your block rate to the 75% max if you choose to go that high (which many do)

Def has always been a second-rate stat in diablo. Only classes who have skills/items which multiply your def will actually care about def on items.

And even IF defence would matter, your comparison would still not make sense, since shield block% isn't just a +stat, it's quite complicated. Increasing the block on your shield form 10% to 20% doesn't really make a difference, since you're still not going to aim for max block. Increasing your shield block from 80% to 90% doesn't really matter either, since the amount of stat points saved would be minimal, because of the way block is calculated. If you'd increase your shield block from 60% to 70% however, that would save you alot of stat points to pump into vit.

So the amount of help you get from 1% extra block on your shield depends on how much blocking your shield already has.

The same amount of defence can also help differently depending on how much def your already have, and how much % bonus defence you have from items/skills, so it's relative.

Generally though, as has already been said, go for blocking chance on shield (unless it's too low to boost to max block anyway. 60-65% is usually the lowest block a shield can have for it to be worth pumping to max block
