I just killed both my tourny characters last Sunday, so the timing is good.
I rolled a Barb: I think I'll keep him -it could be a lot worse.

So, I played briefly today, up through Blood Raven and the two crypts. I just realized I didn't clear the hole out in the Plains, so that'll be the start for tomorrow.

I love new characters. They're a lot of fun. I don't love so much the way the rolls turned out so far.

The Blood Moor brought me to level 5, and gave me Psychic Hammer, Claw Mastery, Dragon Talon, and a saved point. Not terrible, though the Talon point is kind of wasted.

The Den brought level 6, and two more saved points (lvl 6/quest). It also coughed up a unique. What unique would that be? Why, Rixot's Keen! Who knows what kind of item it would be. I also found a ethereal sceptre, which almost does as much damage as the Rixot's.

Level 7 opens up all the new level 6 skills, which is good, but it gave a point in Fists of Fire. Which is bad, as it's claw specific. Oh well.

Level 8 gives yet ANOTHER Martial Art Skill. Dragon Claw. Is the game trying to tell me something?

Level 9 spits out another free point, which means I have 4 saved now.

Level 10, where I stopped, gave a skill I could actually use. Burst of Speed! Alright!

So, the plan is to keep saving points until the pre-reqs for Blade Fury unlock themselves. Why waste my precious free use points, says I!

CryBaby is off to a start.

A major issue with a Barb is the potential for lost skill points in the six weapon masteries -particularly the Poleaxe, Throwing and Spear masteries which we'll inevitably be unable to use due to S/U shields and one handed weapons. Also, Find Potion, Find Item and Grim Wand, plus Increased Stamina represent another 4 low-value Barb skills.

I'm a clvl 14 and have finished Stony Field. My skills so far?

Axe, Sword and Mace Mastery - 1 each
Howl, Shout, Find Potion (ouch!) -1 each
Bash - 1 Double Swing-2 (these have been my freely picked skills.)

Given the lack of interesting slvl 12 Barb skills, I think I'll wait until I level up to 18 before investing any more free-pick skill points. So, I'll have a lot of skill points to play with eventually.

If you have extremely good luck, the only Mastery that is a complete waste is the Polearm Mastery. A unique javelin would make use of the other two you mention.

Find Item - low value? You gotta be kidding me! If you use it (at decent level) on most of the corpses you will probably almost double the pool of S/U items you see over the course of the game!



@erimatbrad: Why don´t you like the point in DTalon? Myself, I know that I want a point both in DTail and DFlight, for situational use (group Knockback and 'poor woman´s Teleport').




Melica has rescued Cain. As always, starting off with an assassin has been very easy. No duplicate skill rolls yet, and I´ve gotten some very good skills (BoS and CoS). I´ve saved all my 5 free points. Only downside is that the trap tree has opened up way more than I wanted it to. There are some good skills here I will eventually want to have, but this feels like too soon...

I have a question...what's your personal approach on this tourney? Maximizing MF to increase S/U pool? Or minimizing it at first to prevent too many crappy S/U's? Thanks!

It's been a slow first day on the job for Mama_ZanRondo. Full clears/no reruns makes for methodical gameplay. I now see how an Amazon is at a huge disadvantage in this tournament. Most of their skills benefit two-handed weapons; the only one-handers are throwing weapons, and they won't come for a looong time. If I ever find some Titan's, though, you all had better watch out. :teeth:

Been running at /p8, no NDEs. Just rescued Cain, and it's time for bed. Been utilizing a bow while I still can. Found my first set, Hsarus' Iron Fist... what a horrible item for an Amazon. If I find another shield, I'm automatically forced to go melee until A3, and I pretty much would call that a death sentence.

edit: how do we determine a winner exactly? Obviously, the # of s/u is the first determining factor, but from there, how do we split a tie? Highest/Lowest level? Furthest quest?

Erimatbrad, can I join with Megaera, the character from the first SU worship tourney? She has only went through Act 1 and was parked in Lut Gholein. I would really like to play that particular character, not another one, I think I wouldn't join otherwise...

That's debatable for sure... In the original tourney, I went with zero MF and avoided chests/rocks through Act 1, so that I could use javelins as long as possible. It sped up my gameplay (temporarily), but I hate the thought I might have left behind a Gull Dagger or Hotspur boots. It's likely you'll have to deal with lackluster S/U's anyway, sooner or later. (probably sooner)

In hindsight, I'd say it's better to seek out more S/U's. There are some decent ones, even at low levels. Of course there's plenty of crap too (I'm shuddering at the memory of my zon stuck with the Maelstrom Wand for way too long...:embarassed: )

Since the rules in the prior tournament were much more strict than this one -- I've got no objections to you bringing Megaera over here, especially since you aren't that far into the game. Why don'tcha just go ahead and bring her over?

Well, it's more a matter of '...requires dual claws? boo!'. I'll get use out of DTail and Flight, like you've said, but I'd have preferred a few more free points in more immediately useful skills.

A lot of the early uniques are actually pretty nice. Rixot's Keen, Gull, Gnasher, Tarnhelm, Nagelring, Hand of Broc, Hotspur....

Though you also stand a risk of getting stuck wielding a Torch of Iro in one hand, and a Bane Ash in the switch. I'm currently running with a whole 8% MF, and it's coughed up one unique, and more rares than I remember seeing last time with more MF, to be honest.

That's the argument in the pro-MF column. If you keep your MF down to a minimum, you'll get more mileage out of your runewords. I, personally, am hoping to avoid a second weapon, until I can get through Act 2 with a Steel Flail.

In the end, it all comes down to luck. I'm hoping to keep my MF up as high as possible. This time, unlike the first, you can keep socket fillers and S/U items in an Atma stash.

So, to me, the earlier I start maximizing MF, the more likely I am to have a complete set or three. Even the novice sets are pretty nice, with the sad exception that you can't upgrade set items.

I rolled 2 points into Amp Damage, woo ha. I feel like I'm going to be playing a Drunk Necro.

OK, I'm in, I'm not sure how much time I'll get to devote to this one but the last one ran for a long time, so I'm sure I'll have some time to play eventually! I rolled a 3, barb, so I'll have to cope with the multiple mastery issue, ugh.
