Sacred - Any thoughts?

Sacred - Any thoughts?

I was thinking of buying Sacred (I went to buy it a couple of weeks ago, but the local Comp USA didn't have it) and I know a lot of you have been playing it. Any thoughts? We've all heard the D2 comparisons but I've also seen some mention of disappointment. Have they put out any patches to improve gameplay? Etc... Thanks for your comments.

Yes, it have been a big disappointment to me. There is alot of bugs but they are being fixed as we speak and the most "destroying bugs" have been fixed. There are just minor ones but pretty annoying ones left now. A new patch (1,7 (the seventh patch...)) is being planned for release in mid-june that will fix alot of things and add things to the gameplay. Check out the news on Sacred-Fans.net and you can watch a log there on what will be fixed etc.

Other than the bugs, this game is really fun. If I where you, I would wait for patch 1.7 or just buy it now and download the latest patch and hope the bugs wont destroy to much of your game fun.

I personally gave up on it. The skill system, while a good idea in theory, just doesn't work very well in practice for me. Every skill, basically, is timered, and to get skills up to a level where they do you any good also means creating such huge time gaps where you can't use any skills that they're still pretty useless. Also, like Nacaa said, it's still really buggy. So's D2, of course, but aside from the bugs, it's a great game. Sacred, once fully patched, now seems like it will be only a fair game.

My personal opinion: save your money.

Nacaa & spiral55 - Thank's for your thoughts. It looks like its still a wait and see or just a 'could have been'. I've been playing D2 for a long while now and haven't bought anything new in a few years (depressing, hun?). I guess it's time to hunt Meph some more.

The reason I've been quiet/inactive here is due to playing Sacred. The storyline and general setting/world is much more advanced than DII...there's more it's more of a RPG than DII in that sense.

The skill system needs tweaking, as mentioned before. In theory, the concept is very nice and could be well balanced. Think of it as playing a DII character where all skills are timered, but where with skills/stats you can bring down the regen time...but increasing the skill also increases the regen.
It's a system that I like but that right now isn't balanced. Some skills (although fun/cool/nice) you won't ever use, due to the regen time. Some skills you'll just pump to max (Summon Woodland Companion...a Valkyrie sort of) since regen time is irrelevant. Most skills you use will sit at level 1 for a very long time though.

One of the biggest flaws: the very limited amount of skills slots. You start with 1 skill slot and gain a few, maxing out at 5 slots eventually. Think of a skill slot as a hotkey for a skill in DII. Now in DII, alot of builds can go by utilizing no more than 4 skills...but in that number you'll also have to figure (pre-)buff skills. Try casting buffs by not using a hotkey but instead by clicking on the right skill icon and selecting the skill, casting it, then switching back in the same manner. This should make it clear why a great number of skills in Sacred are never used by players...they're simply not good enough to justify having in a skill slot and switching is too much of a hassle. In my opinion, Ascaron should double the skill slots, that should fix the problem and get players to actually use those skills.

Equipment is alot more fun than in DII...graphs are much nicer and you'll actually see each piece of equipment change your appearance. However the distinction between item types/rarities is quite vague at the moment. Also mods on items need some tweaking.

Bugs....there's plenty of them, but personally, I've experienced only a few...almost exclusively random side-quest not triggering correctly. Nothing game-stopping, nothing big. In the current patch, game-stopping bugs should be extinct and there's still alot of work being done. But Ascaron is really active when it comes to bug-fixing/patching...more than any other company I've seen before. Yes the game should have been alot less buggy when released, but we all know how games are push onto the market nowadays...at least this company is trying to fix things that they missed due to release deadlines.

Monsters are alot cooler than DII monsters...big monsters are big and not like semi-big like the act bosses in DII. Your average Orge compares to Andariel size and you should be able to guess how much bigger Giants are than you. Did I mention the Dragons yet? The first time I ran into a Dragon I was dead before I had it totally on my screen. And you have a bigger area of view than in DII. Also there's flying monsters that'll actually swoop down and breath fire down on you and that likes. Lots cooler than the 'flying' monsters in DII.

Character animation isn't as good as in DII though. Walking/running for some classes just doesn't feel right...it's not quite smooth/fluent. Bit hard to explain but it just doesn't feel natural for some characters. Overal graphical quality if of course alot better, nothing strange considering the fact that DII was released years ago.

Overall, I think the game is well worth the money. Right now it's not as good as DII yet, but it could very well get there. And it sure is a nice break from DII for me (I'm getting to the point where DII doesn't have to offer me much anymore).

You want to play an newer rpg game that isnt so much hack and slash as D2Lod? - play "Sacred"

-some games are so mediocre, bugs giving them the finishing blow
-some games are so good and cool, even bugs cant take away the fun

"Bejond Divinity" is also to be released soon (or is already), lets see if its a good game.

I gave up on the game, mainly due to the severe problems with the skill system already outlined by other posters. I also don't see the game as being significantly less linear than Diablo 2; sure, you're perfectly free to ignore the plot and go wandering off on your own, but you'll almost immediately get into areas where the monsters are simply too hard for your level and you'll be forced back along the preplanned route.

Haven't heard anything about this supposed revamp for mid-June, though--guess I'd better check out the Ascaron forums!

I still say "Sacred" is a nice game.

After playing all kinds of rpg games about 20 years now, I should know something about them.

-but it could be that its just not the type of rpgs you like to play
-if you are looking for a game that will quickly make your characters ueber so that you can brag about that in some forum, then dont play it
-If you are looking for a fantasy game with somewhat of a story, huge gameworld, interesting features, then lock yourself in your room, play and forget about anything else

tenyearsgone, try the demo first. It is fun and if the game is like the demop it should be fun once fully patched.

I was planning to buy Sacred, but I think I'll wait for a while to see what people are saying about it. Maybe this summer.

*Hijack* I have been really wanting to buy Knights of the Old Republic. Anyone play that?

Its one of the best rpgs ever.
Any person who says differently does not know how to enjoy a good game.

Nuff said.

And Morrowind. It does kind of force you back into the main plotline like Sacred does, but that's okay, there's still so much to explore. Also, the skill system is probably the very best ever, in my opinion. It's handy for us anti-social types, and for those who keep odd hours and might have trouble meeting with a regular D&D group. :D

I'll give Sacred some credit. In terms of graphics and design, sound, and story, Ascaron did an excellent job. Too bad the game itself is very blah.

And @ nikstone: I've been playing RPG's in one form or another for 20 years as well. So, that makes my dissenting opinion equally as valid as yours. :p

I'm in the 20 Year RPG club too. Anyone remember Rouge, or any of the other early Computer RPG games that used ASCII characters for items, monsters, etc... You were a @ walking around fighting & with your !. Pretty fun.

Anyway, sorry for the hijack. Sacred looked darn good when I saw it, but I have learned to read the reviews on a game prior to buying it. Blizzard games are the only ones that I would purchase on day 1 without even knowing anything else about the game.

 One of the best games I've ever played. Depends a bit what you want from a game though - KOTOR's strengths lie in the story and roleplaying elements, rather in the hack/slash side of things.

has it been 20 years since I played D&D? sheesh...

I just spent 4 days on a short film where the main character was a D&D addict so we had lots of the books lying around the set. I was amazed at how much I remembered from those old 2nd edition books. fun stuff it was...

My biggest problem with Sacred is that there is no ATMA and no viable way to mule between characters in SP.
