I just finished reading Bashiok's comment on skill runes and such, and it came to me that an easy way to avoid hot swapping is with a guy in town that does it for you.
Things the runesmith could do could range from:
Swapping runes
Gambing runes
Buying runes
The bottom two really depend of if runes will work with a horaldric cube type object like to upgrade like in d2.
