Are you playing on bNet or single player?

If single player what version are you playing

You're using a grey shield, not a blue/yellow/gold one, right?

EDIT: yep, runewords don't work in magic items

I am playing v1.12.

It is blue. So that means it is magic?

yes it does. And you can't make runewords in magic items.

only make runewords in grey items, yup (white items with two sockets)

(a common mistake..., i might add, for first timers)

I found a 4 socketed flail. It has a gray title but it has "50% damage to undead" mod. Can I make out of it heart of Oaks.

You can't find a flail that doesn't say "50% damage to undead". It's an auto mod, just like amazons bow have +skills and orbs have mana or life.

So you might, as long as it isn't magic, rare, unique or set and oak can be made in a flail.

It has to have grey title, is that it. The title can't be blue.

Yes.

Except that ethereal items also have grey names, and they may not have sockets.

If you have a white named item, then you can put sockets in it (with cube or larzuk), and it will become grey.

It's not an automod. Automods are things like bonuses to skill trees on amazon bows or javalins, res or ar/%ed on paladin shields, life/mana on orbs etc. For the sake of completeness: Staffmods are bonuses to single skills on wands, orbs, staves, scepters, orbs and barb or druid helms(I might have forgotten something here). Orbs can have staffmods and automods at the same time.

All mace class (including scepters) and staff class weapons have a 50%ed bonus to demons, it's an inherent bonus. HotO will work on a nonmagical flail. Not on scepters or any kind of maces BTW, as with respect to runewords, the term "mace" is a bit tighter. It won't work on a war hammer, for example.
