Rune words in all grey items?

Hi all,

A lot of grey items show up with blue mods. Now I know that for instance with a superior normal item, this happens and it can still be used for rune words. My q is, does this apply to all grey items (with the right amount of sockets)? Can they all be used for rune words, regardless of the blue mods that they have?
