Did you try to put the runeword in a magical weapon or a normal (white) one?

runewords can only be put in either a socket'd weapon (gray color) or a normal weapon (white). These weapons also has to have the right amount of sockets for the runes. Since ur item was magical (blue), it will not work.

I really doubt that, since it's impossible.
You might have had some Echanced damage/defense in the item and you thought it was magical.
As already said, the only items you can make runewords with are the white/grey ones.

That might have been superior items or e.g. ones with bonuses to skills while still being nonmagical (like wands, staves or class-specific items). Apart from having the correct number of sockets and being of the correct type, the item name must be displayed in grey, else runewords won't work.

Larzuk won't turn a nonmagical item into a magical one. He will just add sockets, so a nonmacigal one (white or, if ethereal, already grey) will become respectively stay grey.

Staves can spawn with + to certain sorc's skills, but still be non-magical. Your +1 to shiver armor staff would have been grey or white, though definately grey before you socketted the runes required for leaf.
