Rookie Paladin questions:

1)Thorns. After reading the strategy guide that comes with the game, and reading about this Paladin skill, it seems pretty darn good. This Aura returns damage to the baddies smacking you around. How come it's never in any of the Paladin builds I read about here?

2)Auras and other skills. Is there a way for me to keep an Aura active while attacking with a different skill? For instance, I'm a fan of Zeal. Can I have an aura active while using this attack skill? If so, how?

1) it just doesn't work that well, it only counters melee attacks and there are just faster ways of killing people that don't require you to get hit

2) you can assign hotkeys to your skills. You can do this for both mouseclicks (click the white arrow in the bottom left of ur screen)
that way you can put zeal on left click and an aura on right (though you don't have to click for aura's)

1) That strategy guide was written for an earlier version (maybe classic as well), where thorns was effective. Now monsters have huge life and do comparatively little damage

1) Thorns works okay for normal difficulty, but it is nearly useless in Hell. Even in normal, it won't kill many things on its own, but it does help some. It's hell diff where monsters have huge life totals (NM to some extent also).

2) Nothing to see here.

When you're playing, click on the square icon next to your health orb. This will bring up the types of attacks you can do. The square next to your mana orb will bring up attacks and other skills you can use. Set an aura on the square by your mana orb and zeal to the square by your health.

The one on the left is for your left mouse click, the one on the right is for your right mouse click. Helpful hint, if you hold down shift and click you will use the skill or attack while standing still.

You can assign your skills to hotkeys. To do this, simply open up either menu (again, by clicking on the button next to the orbs) and press the hotkey as you're hovering over them. The default keys are F1-F8, but you can edit these in the configurations menu.

What do you mean by a "special attack"

If you mean zeal with aura, follow SST's advice

Sacrifice, Zeal, Smite, Charge, Vengeance, Blessed Hammer, Fists of Heaven, and (I think) Holy Bolt can all be performed while an aura is active.

Like I said, you just need to assign the skill to the left mouse button and the aura to the right mouse button.

What happens if I have an aura active (might, for example), and I'm using Zeal, and I run out of mana? With Zeal assigned to my left click, will I be unable to attack since I'm out of mana?

You'll just do a normal attack until you get enough mana.

You have two boxes on either side of your bottom bar (or whatever it's called) for attacks and skills, each one corresponds with a mouse button either right or left. You can keep an aura on one and use the other for an attack. For example, my Paladin keeps vengeance on the left button and salvation on the right, allowing me to use both at the same time. You can also bind skills to keys by mousing over them and pressing a key, the key pressed should show up in the corner. I've bound several auras to my qwerty keys so I can flash them when needed (cleansing, redemption, meditation...).
