RMAH Commodities

With the recent blue post
The following commodities will be available for trading in the real-money auction house:
  • Gems
  • Dyes
  • Crafting Materials
  • Blacksmithing Plans and Jeweler Designs
  • Pages of Training
The ability to trade gold as a commodity won’t be included in this initial update, but we hope to enable it in the near future. Keep an eye on this thread for further updates.
comes the question:
Are they opening the flood-gates for all the botters/farmers? Will they not buy a ton of commodities with their billions of stored up gold to sell them on the rmah?
If so, would commodity prices in gold sky-rocket?

The floodgates are already open. There's nothing stopping them from flipping and reposting the best gear they can find.
Gold prices are going to go up a bit because there will be far fewer sellers on the GAH and almost the same number of buyers.

Yes, but the difference is that now they can probably set a threshold price for commodities and do the whole buying and selling automatically with barely any monitoring and effort.

I am wondering why anyone would buy commodities on the RMAH other than the highest lvl gems, or maybe fiery brimstone after the legendary buff. As it is commodities are piss easy to get and dirt cheap on the gold AH.

honestly with all the bots in the ah it will be very hard to make much $ here. they already crush the fb by auto buying/salvaging up to a threshold.

Not claiming to be an expert by any means, but suppose they buy out most of the supply of exquisite essence and fiery brimstone and that increases their gold prices significantly - people who need a ton of those for crafting and are not willing to farm all day might buy them from the rmah and still make a profit.

I'm not saying that can't happen, but the current price floor for things like essence is $0.25 each. It won't let you list them lower. Meanwhile on the GAH right now they are about 1k gold each. The price would have to rise to at least 100k gold each to be in line with the gold price floor of $0.25 per 100k. Unless they change the commodity price floor it just doesn't seem feasible that people will pay that price. Hell, I can get stacks of essence by farming that would make me a shameful amount of money at that rate. As much as I would love to pay off my student loans with D3, I think a price jump that high is too much to hope for. But if it does happen? I'll be eating well that night.

Ah, I thought they'd changed the minimum to 0.25 total instead of /unit. In that case yeah, I can only see fiery brimstone reaching the 100+k range.

Are you sure it's bots? While it's simple enough for a bot to do this, it's enough that 5-10 people are doing it at any given time for you to never find one yourself. And searching for salvage-worthy legendary items requires only 1 click of the search button. You don't need to mess with the filters more than once to just keep searching for them (unlike other items where you could look for a variety of different stats that have different values).

And yeah, minimum per total auction rather than minimum per item makes a big difference. With gold AH it is minimum 100g total, not 100g per item, so will probably be the same with RMAH.

If all botters flip the same items then that item will no longer be worth flipping and they'll look for something else to flip. Therefore I don't expect flipping to have a big effect on the price of any specific commodity or even commodities in general.

as i said in the other thread, yes i'm sure. and a bot doesn't have to 'win' very often for it to be profitable. you find one 50m item for 5m thats the cost of the game+ right there.

what it will mean when the commods launch is that humans will have a very small chance to actually see/click/buy low priced commods.

Will bots have a chance, though? Since there will be many bots competing, it might be a waste of time even for a bot...

win some lose some, the better and more risky (ie more queries) win more. plus it depends on what market your bot is competing, like everything some are more popular and watched than others
