Let me try to summarise it.

    1. Americans are god's gift to the world.
    2. American style democracy is the only form of effective government.
    3. If Amerians are not taught that civil rights that are the pinicle of human experience, the world will perish.

    Got it!

That's not what I got from it, but that's okay.

    I got this:

If young Americans are not taught to understand and appreciate the core of the US government, that government will fail.

He says that you need to teach the basic principles of science ( logic, causality etc ) and that the same principles applied to thinking on all levels make you a politicaly matured citicen.

    He is right.

Sure, there are some nationalism in what he says, but I think the core applies to my own country as well.

I got the same thing as Twoflower from it as I don`t view it from an american perspective. Critical thinking, logic, causality and methods to remove bias are extremely important in order to keep a democracy in any form going (whether it`s a republic or more of a European, Australian, whatever else type of democracy). It`s a global problem, but during my stay in the US, I got the impression that it`s a bigger problem there. The rest of the west is right behind you, though. We always are:(

Doesn't sound at all like something he'd say. I'll have to watch it when available.

Thanks. I was hoping SnickerSnack would have provided a link so I shall trust in yours.

Regarding point #2: The US system is largely based on the Brittish, ie, an executive, bicameral legislature, and judiciary. So he needs to spread the credit around.

The world was around long before civil rights were.

He is right. He is looking at it from an USAian angle, but it holds true for all democracies.

    For those still having problems:

He said this in 2006. In all honesty, I want to contact him, and ask him what he thinks now that what he asked for is happening in the U.S.

Removing bias is not necessary to any of the things he was talking about, and you are leaving out most of the points he was trying to make.
Curiousity, outrage, ability to question, dissention, civility, debate, and clarity are also as important as reason and logic. The importance of teaching these things to everyone is what he is saying is critical to the survival of democracy (and he was talking only about the USA, but it can indeed be applied to the world).
His anti-fundamentalist attitude is obvious and I believe he was saying that those fundamentalist attitudes are the true threat to the opportunity, mobility, and freedoms that he believes makes the USA great.
Well said on his part. It's not often we get to see an opinion stated as concisely as this.

Agree. Their discussion was about the USA, but it does apply to any representative democracy. I think it's pretty clear that since that sort of thing is absolutely required to form a democracy, it's required to maintain one as well.

:dontknow: I couldn't get it do embed correctly, which is why I included a link.

I put a link in the original post. I don't know how to get youtube to embed correctly.

Oooooooooh. I see now. I'll fix the first post.

I agree with all of that. One of the things that makes what he said so good is that it is very concise, not just well formed.

Thanks to all that posted. This is a topic that I'm very interested in.

Democracy depends on communications, education, and transportation.
