I'm planning to finally getting around to making a Rhyme shield for my sorc.

I was wondering why every seems to make Rhymes and Splendors in Grim Shields? Heaters have slightly better blocking rate, and can have two slots open also. I figure it's the strength, but most people seem to be able to wear Tal Rasha's armor anyway, and you can wear a Heater if you can wear that.

Also, when you stick a white item in Larzuk's socket quest, does it automatically fit it with the maximum number of slots? Cause I have a nice white Heater I found yesterday in the pits and don't particularly feel like going out of my way to trade for a two socket grim.

Grim Shield has very good def (50-151) and low str requirement. So thats why people use Grim Shield for Rhyme or Splendor. Besides that runeword IS NOT a shield that you would use for max-block so that property is pretty useless...

This is what Arreat Summit has to say about the Socket reward quest from Larzuk:

Act V: Quest 1: Add Sockets
You cannot use the Add Socket Quest reward on Socketed Items.

You can only add Sockets to items that allow Sockets.

Normal items add the max number of Sockets depending on the item's level (this is determined by the level of the monster that dropped it) and the inherent maximum number of Sockets for the item's base type. So you may not always receive the "max" number of Sockets.

Magic Items will receive 1 or 2 Sockets with probability of either assuming that they are possible given the rules for normal. So you'll either get 1 Socket or 2.

Set Items, Rare Items, Unique Items, and Crafted Items add 1 Socket (1 Socket Max).

You cannot continue to add more Sockets with multiple "Add Sockets" rewards.

Grim Shields can be used from level 25, but other than that the Heater is a really good option.

I think Grim Shields are popular because they are extremely easy to find. Don't go out of your way for trading for either. Try to find them yourself.

I do use the heater for a rhyme or splendor on my sorc. To answer your question:

Grim shield can be used at level 22 so as soon as you can use a shael rune (level 27) you can equip a rhyme grim shield.

To use the heater you have to be level 43.

btw, does the following recipe also work with magic, rare, set, and unique shields? :scratch:

1 Tal Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Ruby + Normal Shield = Socketed Shield of same type

nope only normal quality non-magical shields work.
