Returning to my n00b roots - complete n00b question

OK - I don't remember ever seeing this question posed - my apologies if this is addressed in a place I should be aware of, but...

Does a medium or heavy armor on a merc impact his run speed?

I have an eth 2os Diamond Mail that I'd like to use on for "Smoke" on a merc, but I don't know if that will slow him down at all.

Since I broke the ice on some n00bness, let me ask a few more... I'm planning on a trip to the 1.10s HF by my MeteOrb Sorc once I finish my 1.09 Sept and nab that Vex from Countess (currently at level 95, where I finally deviated from Sasja's guide by putting a point in Enchant to give the merc every little bit of help I can), and am planning Shaftstop + Vamp's Gaze for him, keeping the Hone Sundan unless a Reaper's happens to fall.

So, I'm planning on a 14 [email protected] jewel and an upgrade for the Shaftstop, and I'm thinking this jewel for the Gaze (if the darn thing doesn't poof in conversion - I'm finding rare jewels don't tend to fair well in conversion):

Does the LR and FHR top the list of favorable merc jewels, or are there some other mods that are better for merc survivability (the sorc will rely on the merc being able to tank until the Meteors start dropping).

A merc could be buck naked and still trail by a long shot, especially if there is a wall to attack...

EDIT: IAS, damage, and LL are my top merc requirements.

Teleport FTW.

I lost count how many times I've saved his butt when he was just running into a room full of baddies.

Hopefully D3 will have an "aggressive/defensive" toggle for our mercs.
