RL: I have been promised the results today for my last blood test (getting sick of needles now!) which I was supposed to get on Wednesday but they had some things that they wanted to 'double check' or something. Bad because it means they found something, but good because double checking it from the 'same' blood means that they suspect error, generally. Also, uni has started back so my gaming time is going down slightly, although I can't train for the above reasons so that helps xD I also have a LOT of revision to do for a new show at work because my field is biology, not astrophysics. That is what I love about my job though, I learn so much about areas of science that I normally wouldn't get into. Most people don't realise just how specialised scientists are these days, there is no such thing as a biologist, chemist or physicist anymore, it is just too vast now.

D2: Fordyl has almost reached halfway to 99 :D I'm also hoping to get some gold finding done with my blizz sorc.

OVG: So I have a lot of games that I am trying to work on just now, oops! I am not too far into Pokemon Y (anybody else looking forward to Sun/Moon?) and am also hoping to play some more Epic Manager (Thyiad, I'm blaming you for this one :D), although I'm tempted to wait until the next academic holiday so that I can have a clear run at it.

Thank you for the daily! And I hope they don't find anything.

RL: one more 8 hr work day. Then the Pokemon hunt begins. Round 1 begins tonight in Bangor.

D2: Unfortunately cannot catch Pokemon in D2. (But still doing some random starts of characters now again)

OVG: This long weekend's targets are Snorlax and Dragonite.

@Kitteh: They have to double check because they suspect you're an alien.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that the results are good, or at least not too bad !!! Congrats on the progress with Fordyl.

RL: After two months with lots of free days or even weeks off, going back to reality is hard. Good thing that I still have some free days left, and I'm always home on Monday from this week on, for the next 5 years :).

I'm still searching for my next goal when it comes to running. I'd like to do my next 50+K, but there doesn't seem to be one in Belgium which suits me. There's one in December that I might do, although it's from an organisation I said I'd never participate in one of their trail runs again, because they are overly commercial and as a consequence also too expensive and with too many participants. But if there is no alternative, it might still be that one.

I also wanted to convince my running buddies to do the Eiger Trail in Switzerland next summer, but it seems like it's not going to happen. As an alternative, we're probably going on a trail run weekend in the beginning of July, where we just go out and do some trailrunning for 3 or 4 days.

D2: Doing the first character in my oskill sept, the Assassin. Lots of fun !!! I also found a Lo with my Sorc, so I can make my Assassin a Fortitude. I still have to find her a Highlord's though, so I'll probably hit Travincal with my Sorc again. Not sure if I'll do that right away or after I have found the runes for Infinity in LK first though.

OVG: still a lot of things I would want to play, but nothing besides D2 yet.

@Kitteh GL with the results! And while we are at it, what do you study? I'm a "scientist" as well, having a Biology and Biomedical degrees and currently stuck in an office job while trying to figure out where/what field I want to pursue my PhD in.

RL: As above, working. Our Data analysis "team" consists of me and my boss, who is off sick at the moment, so I'm taking things easy. My boss is awesome though, he doesn't really care what I do at work as long as I get things done on time, so if I have free time, I can lurk SPF :p No big plans for the weekend, maybe a dinner at my friend's place tomorrow night, but other than that, just chilling.

D2: LK running. At least until I get Lo, possibly longer if I really want to push for Infinity and make my Blizzsorc graduate from LK/Pindle/Mephi to Travincal. Pindle/Mephi runs are currently done to break the boringness of LK and to gain some exp (/p8 Pindle), in attempt to get closer to lvl95 for gambling/crafting, she is 92.5 atm. She has not beaten Ancients in Hell yet, but that's because I promised myself Fury druid is my first Pat/Mat now that I'm back. Also, looks like @T72on1 has freakishly similar plans than I do (yes, O skill Sept is part of my Sept-Sept plan), I might need to push myself a little bit so I don't fall behind ;)

OVG: Starbound and/or No Man's Sky. Got Starbound this week, it has a lot of promise, I like the nostalgic feel of it and there seems to be lot of things to do, but I'm still stuck without any fuel and with crappy gear. Might also get some more NMS going, have taken a bit of a break, but I really like that game as well, regardless of all the negativity around it. Then again, I only expected to have a simple game, where I can fly around to random planets to find random creatures. That's all I wanted and I'm pretty happy with that at the moment :)

    Enjoy your weekend everyone!

@Neksja Well would you believe it, I study biomedicine :p I'm planning to do a cancer biology masters before my PhD. I worked on cancer in my first and second year projects (it fascinates me) and intend to do the same for my honours project. What options are you considering for your PhD? My focus at the moment is on trying to get a summer vacation scholarship, hopefully the Amgen Scholarship.

    @Cyrax Well of course :p

@T72on1 I hate commercialised races, that is why I've ditched OCR, pretty much. It became all about drama and ego boosting, no sportsmanship anymore.

Yeah, I only found out about OCR after it became succesfull. That's why I never did one, despite the fact that the concept appeals to me.

It is absolutely fantastic. Much higher injury rate than trail running though and more expensive. I've qualified for 2 UK, 1 Euros and a Worlds. Couldn't go to any of them due to either injury or cost. I think most sports are like that. Trail running, although running is big now, is still generally speaking quite 'pure' because most people just want to do road marathons :p

@Kitteh GL with your results. And sorry to hear about the death on Fordyl :(

RL: Off today, I normally work 7am-3pm but I am on call and have to work the overnight tonight so I'm off. Just woke up, made some coffee, cooking some oatmeal. I tried to sleep in so I'd be rested for the overnight but it didn't really work. It's hard when you're so used to getting up so early :/ Gonna eat, drink some coffee and then lay into some D2.

D2: Just one more shako from my shako rack is all I want, and then I'm moving on from this rack. Next goal is wizardspike and valk wing. So it's going to be a lot of map rolling and testing today I think. Blah! Each item found is just one more I don't have to do ever again so that is encouraging. There are only a few more I need and then I'm movin on to other things.

OVG: I haven't recently played it but I have been a world of warcraft addict in the past and the new expansion just came out. It's tempting me but I'm trying to stay strong. I have 9 level 100s that haven't been played since early WoD. Might be nice to binge play a game other than d2...

I'm not staying hah. Definitely not the patch for me. I'm getting what I need and getting out. I think it is worth doing once though for any serious player. The way I see it is a few months of pain then I'll have all the goodies forever. It's a long term investment hah.

    Hope it went well Kitteh.

RL: New job last week (still truck driving, just different firm). Warehouse dude is a bit of a pillock but I only have to tolerate him for about 45 mins, so he may live. Scalded my hand Thursday which was awesome as it was the broken finger. FML.

D2: Er well I watched a "speed run" on You Tube. I thought "2hrs?! wow!". Turned out the guy was on /p1 and he only played/ran through normal. I'm like, ok untwinked but dude seriously? Sigh.

OVG: Epic Manager. That second tier is a complete person of questionable parentage. Kicked out in the first or second trimester (about week 72). Hmm.
Also still addicted to Clash Royale on my phone.

    @Thyiad

Speedrunning D2 is actually extremely interesting. The three top runners are fairly entertaining, especially RyuQuezacotl. Teo1904 is the top runner though, he has records in nearly every category. He's not as exciting to watch, but he's crazy good at the game.

There's a bunch of different categories, there's Any% Normal, Any% Hell, and then both of those hardcore as well is a different category. Each class has it's own leaderboard. Check out the leaderboards here - http://www.speedrun.com/d2lod#Any - you can filter by each class to see world records.

RyuQuezacotl set the Any% Hell HC Sorceress world record yesterday. There are only two people on that leaderboard, himself and Teo. Hardcore speedruns are incredibly difficult to do unless you are very careful and/or waste time by farming. The goal of a speedrun is to consistently be able to finish in that time, so they look for gear that takes a consistent reliable amount of time to acquire. For example, Stealth runeword can be consistently farmed from normal countess. Also farming normal countess simultaneous accomplishes another important goal, leveling. Since there are so many packs on the way down. You'll see speedrunners go for anywhere from level 11-15 depending on if it's normal any% or hell any% and the class they're running. Obviously a big problem is RNG. If an eth rune doesn't drop after 10 runs your time goes into the drain and your run might as well be over because you'll never ever get a personal best time or world record.

Teo specifically has spent a TON of time perfecting the route, and he is very technically good with things like pointer precision, potion management, inventory management and all aspects like that. MrLlamaSC spent a bunch of time making a video tutorial which covers quite a bit in detail. Check out his video of navigating Act 2 maps. This tutorial covers some basics of particular maps, as well as some general tips for running sorceress. But the level of detail as far as what areas you don't need to investigate at all, areas you can skip looking in, where the exits are, it's really impressive that all this thought has gone into it. Teo also made a very basic general map direction guide, which I personally used to learn map layouts for my casual playthroughs when I don't feel like wasting time.

Speedrunning untwinked on players 1 is pretty hard. I recommend anyone who has any criticisms to try it sometime and see what kind of time you get. Even just completing normal. If you record it, you can get on the leaderboard as well, regardless of what your time is. Even if it's like 4-6 hours for a normal only run. I think most people here are probably capable of a 3-4 hour normal run without trying too terribly hard, but when you start shooting for the 2 hour range it's pretty rough, especially on non-sorceress classes.

Well, that got longer than I planned on, I sort of got carried away. I'd make my own separate post on speedrunning but I'm not an expert by any means and couldn't write a guide myself for it.

@Kitteh sorry :( I hope those results come soon and that they're good :( nothing is worse than waiting for news on your health.

Sorry @Kitteh - wishing you the best.

RL: Start my new job on Tuesday as an investigator for the city of Kansas City. Big pay bump, pension system, better healthcare and vacation. I'm really excited. My last day of work was Friday for my last job. Bittersweet. A friend from college moved from St. Louis to KC after I recommended him for the job. Our director liked him a lot. She said he reminded her of me during the interview. Maybe that's why I consider him such a good friend. Too much alike haha.

D2: Opened up a little bit in the trading forum. Didn't think I would end up getting into that but I can see the danger is considerably less so than years ago. Khione, my blizzard sorc, is farming meph, pindle, LK, and trav right now. I'd really like to net a Stone of Jordan and an Arachnids mesh. I'm really wishing I hadn't cubed my Sur runes to a Ber so I could have tried out a bramble. I don't have a base for it yet though. Probably going to give 1.13d a break for a while and focus on 1.07 hc / sc.

@NorthDakota - Speed running has my interest also, although I haven't made many attempts. Recently, I gave the meshif% run a try and ended with 65 minutes to kill Duriel, which was a difficult fight with a near naked druid. I view it as another time optimized run of d2- where instead of optimizing magic finding, rune finding, experience running, etc, it is untwinked questing that is being optimized. If you make a separate post I'd join you.

Also, to expand on the inclusion of normal-only any% run, it's to make it more community/time friendly. It's nice to have the shorter category since not everyone has the time to play or view a single segment hell run that could take 6-12 hours depending on the character. Player settings is set to 1 as the standard (it is the default setting after all). No player settings to abuse during the run. Why not p8 standard? Keep in mind these runs are single segment (one session), so not only would it add substantially more time to an already long run, it doesn't add much entertainment value. Not many people want to see, much less play, a 2 hour hell Baal fight at p8 with a level 61 untwinked character.

To be fair, there is a significant difference between untwinked and twinked speed runs, not to take away from Nightfish's speedy project. (Actually, I read that thread a while ago and enjoyed it too.) Not to mention the other six classes that don't have access to a native teleport skill at level 18.

OH my gosh. What nightfish did in that thread is actually a side hobby of mine in d2. I know for certain you can do it far faster than that at least now (thread from 2006!!). Although I will say nightfish there took it a little easy. He didn't go crazy on the twinking gear like some people have now, and didn't do many runs to optimize his times. Also, going only to hell hellforge is cutting it a bit short for my personal tastes, I like to go at least to hell Shenk, because then you get the socket quest as well. That's so cool that other people do that for fun. Man, nightfish is my idol. And his forum avatar T.T

Thanks for linking that, that's now in my bookmarks forever.

Edit: I would also point out that the current any% hell world record with sorceress is 4 hours, 27 minutes. That's all p1 untwinked, only an hour behind our man nightfish. An incredible time, it really shows that the current d2 speedrunners know their business.

I am currently looking if I could something involving neuroscience and behaviour, as I've done some research involving neuroscience and one of the projects involved monitoring mice behaviour after certain conditions and how it affected their memory and learning, so that was pretty interesting. Cancer research seems to be the big one at the moment, at least it seems like it, so might be a good idea future career-wise to go that way :) But I am not interested in cancer research even a little bit, so not an option for me :) I'm also looking if I could get a job/PhD involving animal welfare in lab studies (almost got one last year, but there was one better candidate than me, still bugs me).

Or I'll go something completely different like oceanography (I did my undergrad in Marine Biology)

Hopefully you'll get your results soon and they are good!
