    Restarting in DOS

I'm running windows XP and I need to reformat my hard drive with windows on it. My floppy drive is broken (a disk got stuck inside and I pulled it out... hasn't worked since  ) and I don't know how to do it another way.

Can someone help me out here? I tried searching but I couldn't really find anything. Thanks.

If you have the Windows install disk just put it in and restart, you should get an option to reformat from there.

Or you can press "F8" just after all the drives load and just before Windows starts loading. This will bring you to boot options. This takes some fairly careful timing so you might have to do it a few times to hit it right.

Oh yeah, you also have to have your tongue hanging just right out the left side of your mouth when performing this procedure. This is crucial.

You may need to go through bios to make sure you "boot from cd" as one of your first options for boot.

Make sure your windows xp cd is in the cd-rom and if youdid it correctly it should prompt you to go to setup. Make sure you reformat and you're good to go.

Make sure you also back upall your files by burninga cd/usb keying ish.

Put in the windows XP cd

restart the comp and press F8 when its checking the memory

select "CD" as primary boot device and it should say "press any key to go to setup" (or something like that) at which point you press something like enter. This will take you to a blue screen which is "windows setup". There you can do things like partition your drive, format, install windows xp, etc.

Don't press "Enter" Press the Space Bar, it may not say any key on your computer, but the space bar on mine says "Any Key" on it.

What you want is the Recovery Console. Boot from your XP CD, and call up the Recovery Console from there.

Thanks everyone. I tried using the install disk and it brought me to that windows recover thing but I wasn't sure if I was suppose to do that if I wanted to reformat the entire drive. Oh and poisonsack, I partitioned my harddrive last time so I'm good to go :)

You could go down to a 2nd hand computer store and pick up a floppy for $2 and install it

You probably wasted more than $2 in electricity just making this post and reading the replies.

Ok I've tried what everyones said and I can't get it to reformat. When I leave the CD in, it says push any key to boot from cd and the only options from there are to install and recover windows. If I take the CD out and use F8, it brings me to a screen with a bunch of options like safe mode, debugging mode, etc, but nothing to do with reformatting.

    Some help please

    Jonny, quit being a dick.

Boot off the CD, and launch the Recovery Console. From there, you can type "format C:" (without the quotation marks).

I guess I should have checked: You do have a Win XP CD, and not a Win XP Recovery disc, right?

Play the XP cd,choose install option.Windows will show which hard drive to format and install if there are partitions. The recovery thing is not the right option, choose 'install'.Xp shows the partitions, once chosen it will both format and install windows.

Don't forget to check which kind of formating type you want.

Check properties of your current C drive and check if it's either FAT, FAT32, or NTSP.

Yeah about that. Found any on asian avenue yet?

Its not a joke. I have a floppy from an old laptop that is connected into the parallel port on the computer and if he wants it he can have it as long as he pays for the postage seeing as his floppy is broken.
