Resident Evil

Hmm, with 5 release (hopefully) now drawing nearer, and considering DMC4 technical awesomeness on PC (heh, I still remember that kinda lame PC port of first RE, and even RE4 (well, mostly PS2 fault to be completely correct) has some issues - CAPCOM really changed it seems, at least from PC gamer view), I CAN'T wait :jig: Well, I still haven't finished Mercenaries in 4 (as in got that completely IMBA Hand Cannon) yet :scratchchin: Maybe I should hone my skills a bit in preparation...

Anyone here also looking forward to it?

I stopped watching after the II.

Sequels generally go one way ... down hill

Re: Resident Evil

Not exactly true in gaming world I would say :) Even RE 3 wasn't bad, and 4 was really good (even though I liked 2 more because of quick replayability of scenarios).

Yes RE5 looks damn great. Now I've got to save for an Xbox360. However dead space looks tonnes better imo and as such I'll be getting that first after I pay $450 or so for the machine. I enjoyed the first RE, missed 2-3, wished I'd had a cube when 4 came out. Won't miss this one though.

Re: Resident Evil

Yes, games do not conform to the general rule of sequels.

I think the best RE was maybe the remake of 1. Although original 1 and 2 are both close contenders. I still haven't played 3 through far enough to judge. Code Veronica started out lame but seems to have improved quite a lot. Still playing that.

RE4 would've been okay as an action game, but as a Resident Evil it sucked. I mean, it's not even survival horror. The gameplay was really solid (but way too long and repetitive, a lot of those areas should just have been cut, and the earlier levels were much more interesting than the later ones) but my god the plot had the ***. And it devolved into a mindless shooter frenzy with fast zombies carrying machine guns... I mean ****, if you want to make an action game where you wipe out enemy soldiers with piles of ammo then do it but don't call it frigging Resident Evil.

Plus everyone looks anime-y and ***.

I'm liking RE4 so far. It's definitely fun on the Wii because you get to use the wiimote to aim on the screen.

Re: Resident Evil

Well, seems a lot of people were a bit fed up with RE style after RE 3 (I haven't played Code Veronica). I agree that RE4 wasn't AS scary, though I was rather afraid all the time (dogs around the lake were my favorites).

I think acting and plot were up to RE standard. Some really good cheesy lines :) And there weren't any zombies in RE4, of course .-)

Re: Resident Evil

Resident evil plots have allways been terrible.

"Hey I got a great idea to make of money. Let's hire the most brilliant scientists in the world then kill all of them to hide the work we paid them to do"

Now rince and repeat across 10 games or so.

Re: Resident Evil

I thought the dogs were pretty lame. They were much worse enemies in the other games.

If you ask me the best enemies were those shambling things you had to shoot the parasites out of with the infra red scope.

The plots weren't exactly Planescape Torment but at least I felt vaguely interested in them and didn't spent every cutscene groaning in agony.

Re: Resident Evil

Well, I've found dogs really scary - I mean, not *the* dogs, but those parasites that sprouted from their bodies of course.

My favorite enemy was probably Garrador (that blind guy with claws).

Re: Resident Evil

The dogs in Resident Evil 1, those where scary. But then that was the first and last actual survival horror game of the resident evil series. After that you're pretty much playing the infinate ammo shooter.

He was pretty good too.

True.

Although I played RE2 on hard mode and ****, there wasn't nearly enough ammo around.

pooped my pants on re4, i'm such a wuss with games like this... xD
Pfft, even Doom 3 had more scary moments.

Not as much fun though.

Re: Resident Evil

Condemned on the 360 has a pretty good creepy atmosphere, and some rather scary moments.

Re: Resident Evil

Condemned would have been great if it wasn't for the doors.

You could carry 2 weapons in total and alot of doors where very specific about what they wanted to be broken down with. An oak door would preffer a red axe while a ceder door liked a red age with a curved tip. Plywood doors liked to be knocked down by green axes and what this all adds up to is that the bigger and slow weapons where less usefull in fighting so you where forced to run back and forth collecting a weapon to knock down a door then running back to get the original weapon you had in that slot. Most of the time it was the hourly firearm you managed to secure that had to be thrown away to get a door opening weapon.

Re: Resident Evil

I don't remember that limitation at all. The gameplay wasn't the greatest, but I thought it made up for it in atmosphere.

Re: Resident Evil

Well, the only thing scary about RE1 were Hunters (well, I have to admit they were probably the most dangerous monster in series - I don't think there were any other common enemy that could one hit kill you from full health, but I may be wrong). I don't think there were ammo problems in any RE - only 'problem' was of course ammo management when you were doing speedruns (but that added that nice element of planning your route - I loved that especially in RE2).

Re: Resident Evil

The room with the birds and the paintings was scary.

Especialy since at the time I was a ten year old swede and the room put great effort on english reading and the punishment for making an error was death.
I still remember the order but not all words made as much sense then as it does now

new born baby
infant
lively boy
young man
middle-aged man
bold looking old man

Back then it was more like

?????? baby
??????
????? boy
young man
?????? man
???????? old man

But I managed to solve if after taking infant on a guess.

Re: Resident Evil

I don't think I've ever found a game scary, but they can make you jump sometimes. It's more like suspense than scares.

I thought most of the "scary" moments involved plain old zombies. Particularly in the remake.
