Regarding number of sockets. Has anyone here taken advantage of...

...the fact that a cracked/crude/low quality item that you fix with the "item + chipped/flawed gem" recipe gets its item level set to 1?

I´ll take an example. Let´s say you have a character who has managed to scrape together the runes necessary to make a 'Lionheart' armor and you want to make it in a Dusk Shroud (good defense, lightweight, reasonably low STR requirement). A normal non-magical Dusk Shroud would always get 4 sockets from Larzuk and would get these numbers of sockets with the socketing recipe:

    1/6 chance of 1 socket
    1/6 chance of 2 sockets
    1/6 chance of 3 sockets
    1/2 chance of 4 sockets

    BUT...

...since a Dusk Shroud with an ILVL of 1 can have a maximum of only 3 sockets, you would always get 3 sockets from Larzuk and the socketing recipe would yield:

    1/6 chance of 1 socket
    1/6 chance of 2 sockets
    2/3 chance of 3 sockets

and you could make your 'Lionheart' much easier.

(Adding to the usefulness of this for an untwinked character is that the first
item of each elite type you find is often a low quality one.)

    Visit:

    http://www.diabloii.net/items/sockets-list.shtml

to get more ideas for suitable items. Even the biggest elite polearms and spears would get a cap at 3 sockets if they have ILVL=1. Good for some runewords, perhaps. 'Crescent Moon' comes to mind.

EDIT: Ooh, 3-socketed Phase Blades! 'King´s Grace', 'Crescent Moon', etc.

if it does work, then yea, they would be handy for 3 socket runewords, but the odds are better that youd find a 3 socket befre a 4 socket to cube into a 3 socket.

In the Assassin forum and the Necro forum a thread was posted about 2 weeks ago about getting low lvl "staff mods" on elite items. This could be used as well as that method and the socketing could be used.

Here is the thread from the assassin forum.

Uuh, what I meant was that you find a low quality one and cube it twice to get the three sockets (once to make it a normal item and once to socket it).

I am pretty sure you find far more low quality items than 3-socketed ones.

Of course you will need the runes necessary (Tal + Thul in this case). All the socketing recipes uses runes from Tal to Amn and they are not rare (even untwinked characters will find a couple of those).

this could most certianly be a useful thing to keep in mind for untwinked chars. there's nothing worse than having your heart set on a runeword, finally getting all of those runes to makes your self one, and then not being able to get your hands on a damn socketed item you like.

This is exactly how I got my 3-socket Archon Plate for my Enigma. I found a Low Quality Archon Plate, cubed it to a normal Archon Plate, then took it to Larzuk for socketing and got 3 sockets.

How do you propose finding an ILVL=1 Dusk Shroud? The earliest you can find a Dusk Shroud is off NM Smith (mlvl 43) and then, he never drops white items. After that, it's the Bloody Foothills (area level 58) ...

Gotta read the whole post Doc ;) The cube recipe which takes a low quality item and makes it normal also sets the ilvl to 1 (as well as re-rolling staffmods on the item, which can be important).

This is certainly a good idea if used wisely.

Heh. As always I am behind the fashion  A week or so ago everyone was editting their 'tars to include a WTF message. But then by the time I stumbled upon that cute mug picture, they'd all moved on to whatever the new fad is :)

Mine owns all, Tren, and you know it. :p

    So to get back on topic;

I never really thought about it... then again I don't use runewords too often. Stealth is one I like to use early on on most of my characters. Along with Zephyr for some characters. King's Grace every now and then, but I usually just work with what I've got in sets/uniques.

I could see how it'd be more useful for you, though, jiansonz. Since you usually play Untwinked HC without MFing and whatnot.

On the contrary, I wear as much MF I can get my greedy hands on (without dropping the survivability too low (other than on a few hurtful occasions. Ouch!)). Remember that:

    "Topazes are a guy´s best friends." :)

If you mean that I don´t repeatedly "run" areas/bosses/containers while wearing lots of MF then yes, that is correct. Full clearing once, that´s me.

No, mine owns all, "Primary target comfired ..., you are terminated! astalavista baby"

Back to topic, I always avoid ilvl 1 items. It is too hard to tell if it is created from char editor (I don't know any work for 1.1, but hope I never know), or it is legit. I feel better to read something like ilvl 85.

meh. My wtf 'tar is the best. Doc might recognize it from the gatsby ads. ;) :D

Very nice observation. Surely very useful, and not just for untwinked players. gg. :D

I can't help to hijack it, but isn't your tar the sign from animated film "transformor" or some similar name? I saw it when I was young, but don't remember the name (I'm too old to remember it). You know your tar is a powerful machine, and I, CONTROL all machines.
