I have a noobish question: What is Origin? Something similar to Steam?

Yep, it's a Steam clone (for EA's own published games). It's not as awful as U-Play... that's about the only nice thing I can say about it.

The whole "free for a limited time" thing is pretty much just a gimmick to get people to install and try Origin. I got The Sims 2 (complete edition) and Dead Space for free during earlier promotions.

If it costs you something - say, the time you need to spend installing something you don't really want. like "Origin" - HTF can the game be said to be free?

It's like "free McDonalds wifi". It isn't free, it costs you the time required to jump through their registration hoops and it costs you your personal information that has a market value as well as a personal value.

People need to stop calling shit, "free" when it clearly isn't, FFS.

That's it. Now I'm mad, and it's all kris' fault *fume*

Well, you are free to do it or not, so I don't see a reason to go mad.

BTW, do you have an Origin account?

Why? Should I have an Origin account? What will it cost me?

I'd say your soul, but I think several people already have dibs on it.

RA2 is one of my favourite games, I try to play it once every 1-2 years. Installing the game from old CDs and copying the cinematics over seems like too much work.

I already have Origin installed so this was very easy. For the record I don't work for EA. ;)

You get the games for giving them your address etc. I wouldn't calling that selling one's soul. It's still a good idea not to give away personal information all too easily.

IIRC, you don't have to give them any legit info aside from a working email address unless you're planning to make purchases through Origin (which I don't recommend; Steam, GOG, GMG and the Humble Store are all superior).
