Well, at the moment the most commonly duped items are runes, and occasionally a duped rune will poof. As far as I know there's no sure-fire way to tell if it's real or not, someone correct me if I'm wrong, though knowing which items are faked the most can be helpful. If you're just starting you probably won't have much to trade for high runes for a little while. A lot of people trade for them anyway because the odds of actually finding a rare rune are lower than the odds of being hit by a falling plane that was struck by lightning, but finding them yourself or trading with people you trust are generally good ways to keep from getting a "fake". In the trading forums you can find lists of other commonly duplicated items. There used to be a way to temporarily perm items, but I've heard that doesn't work anymore, so if you trade for a commonly duped item there's always a chance that you'll lose it.

Keep in mind that you don't need the massively overpowered runewords in order to enjoy and be effective in the game, even in Hell difficulty. If you have a bit of patience and plan your character well, you can easily finish the game and be a very good item finder for subsequent characters. Ber, Zod, Cham - the high level runes are so rare that the chance of any given one you see someone using online being legitimate is practically nil. In Normal, you can do very well with magic (blue) items. There are rare (yellow) items that can be better than anything else, if you're lucky enough. And with some time and a touch of luck, you can get execeptional or elite unique (burlywood) items that will allow you to dominate monsters.

The nice thing about not relying on overpowered runewords is that you are forced to actually develop your playing strategies and adapt to each situation you will face. In the end, it's a much more fulfilling experience, IMHO.

about duped runes: if you use a duped rune and one you found and cube them to a higher one, is there a possibility that new rune will still poof?

No idea. There are several threads about that in these forums, but I'm not sure there is a consensus. Nothing is foolproof, but if you are that concerned about losing dupes, I'll give these 2 points of advice:

1) Play ladder. It is not perfect, but at least the currency isn't 3/20/20 charms or sojs. Yes, there are rune dupes, but I have become more and more certain that there has only ever been one 3/20/20 legitimately cubed on non ladder and that charm, with its offspring, was then duped 12,483,975,443 times. I think there must have been 2 sojs, though, because I found one in 1.09 ;)

2) Don't buy stuff with real money from any place or any person. Do you know how hard it is to find a zod, even with a bot running 24 hours a day? How do you think those websites have hundreds of them to sell? It is not from finding them. It is from duping them or trading botted items to those that duped them. So make your fortune the old fashioned way, and play this game 16 hrs a day for a month until you have enough crap to trade up to the dupes. That way you can have the joy of being legitimately incensed when the item disappears.

This game is all about great patience. Items will come to you soon enough. Any high rune... just don't trade for them. Takes even the luckiest players to require patience. Just keep mfing and shape your character nicely and soon enough, rares will pop.
