It's a kind of archive file like .zip. Google for winrar to open it, it's a shareware download that's free.

Basically less wellknown type of compression like winzip. At first i thought it was some virus so i stayed well clear of it. lol.

Overall, .zip is much more common than .rar, but i would say rar is definitely the second most used archive type.

Seems everything compressed Ive downloaded of late has been a rar file. I dont even have winzip on this comp. I like winRAR a lot more than zip, but thats just me.

Everywhere uses Rar now. Zip is pretty much obsolete.

I was first confused with rar as well. Later i found out. But yesterday i was downloading something in a 7z format. It turned that 7-zip is another type zip file. It's not that common though but its sharewar as well.

I use ExtractNow. It does all archives I've come across.

Well it looks like ExtractNow does not support the 7-z file format. 7-z is kinda rare. I've never even heard of it until a few days ago.
