    Ranger index 3 of ?

    Seeing as how the index was wiped out, and that I did not make a back up on my comp... which I will do after I finish rebuilding it. And that the Ranger sticky is well unorganized and has some things it should not have, I am remaking this.

    PLEASE Do not post any comments or questions in this thread, it will only have chapters, all questions should be made in posts (if anyone has a ranger guide/index they want to add, email it to [email protected] or [email protected] Thank you

    Chapter 1: The basic Ranger.

    A Ranger is a paladin that uses a bow or cross bow . While There are many different subclasses of a Ranger they still all revolve around the same basic idea. In this index I will carefully outline skill choices (and if certain gear is needed I will out line that as well). In the next update I will really get into detail about dueling…havent had enough exp

    The Ranger is very easy to play. A few of the sub classes are semi-difficult but clearly if you are reading this you know that. Basically grab a bow get a tanking mercenary and just head out. Wait that’s an amazon sorry. Rangers take a bit of strategy while you play. The basics are unlined here:
    When playing an area of fast moving hard hitting monsters (dolls) let your mercenary earn his 10k revival and make him tank for you. I cannot stress this enough, if you think your sad little red bulb will last more than 1 doll pop in hell, my friend this is not the build for you. Once you get out of the threat of fast moving monsters you will have the other type of monsters (yes there are 2 types based in hell) The slow moving hard hitting mega-beasts (the uders and such). These guys are a pain to any class that cannot tank for its self. I noticed that if I got them broken up from a mob my mercenary could USEALLY handle them, not always as he has a habit of attacking a wall or lesser monster a lot. But seriously playing the ranger goes something like this

    Code:
    R = Ranger
    M= Mercenary
    B= Boss pack
    FM= Fast monster
    SM= Slow monster

               R

               M

    B        FM              SM

    Chapter 2: Skill Layout and Investment

    The skill table was created by Dreamsmith to display howmany points each subclass of ranger requires. As you can see there are huge differences based on whether you use an element or not. This table puts all spare points in blessed aim for the passive skill bonus while also making sure to maximize all synergies.
    Code:
    Code:
    (Mi=Might, BA=Blessed Aim, Co=Concentration, Fa=Fanaticism, Fi=Holy Fire, Fr=Holy Freeze,
    Sh=Holy Shock, Th=Thorns, Sc=Sanctuary, Cv=Conviction, RF/RC/RL=Resist Fire/Cold/Lightning,
    Sv=Salvation, All=The total skill points used to complete this build.)

    A few things to keep in mind. All resist x skills give a passive +1 to max reist per every 2 points invested. Blessed aim gives +5% attack rating for every point invested. When using conviction, enemy defense will be so low that you will find a high attack rating useless. Sanctuary does not apply to ranged weapons. Holy fire can hit targets twice when using a bow that fires explosive arrows or bolts, (holy fire hits from the arrow, then hits again from the splash). While a firepower ranger takes advantage of this ability, a pyromantic ranger will uses an explosive arrow with holy fire and instead of investing in attack rating to hit the target, will acquire all the fire damage gear he can get to create as powerful a splash as possible. Wizendraw can have up to neg target 35% cold resistance on it, thusly this bow is a prime choice for the holy freeze ranger. Rogues bow is considered the fastest bow in the game and therefore is a great choice for any shock ranger.

    Untill a more detailed and supported gear guide is created, I do not think there should be one.

    Look for primary bonuses for bow users on your gear such as:

    Resists
    Speed of all types
    Knockback
    Crushing Blow
    Open Wounds/Poison
    Cold duration or hit freezes target
    Ignores Target Defense
    Attack Rating
    Enhanced Damage/elemental damage
    Deadly Strike
    And anything els you see fit to help you.

    Raven,
    BoTD in a bow? What are you on? Haha thats a waste of high runes (Zod namely) BoTD is more of a melee weapon, not to useful for a ranger sure it has the IAS and its damage is good, but its mainly melee mods. Bow runewords that are useful are HoJ and Silence mainly, I'll try to email you a list of good bows/runeswords (Im shocked you put that in there you runeword hater you)

    wow, I can see in my absence a lot has been done. Really disapointing, did the ranger species die out or something? Anyways, as most of you prolly guessed I got busy in school work quit playing, and well I don't play on returning. I hope someone decides to continue this Ranger Index and put in some more guides. There is so much more to be added.

    Heh... looks like we both stopped playing around the same time. OTOH, I've recently returned to it -- I kept logging in every month or so to keep my characters from expiring. A few days ago, I just started playing a bit and *bang*, Wizendraw drops at my feet. Is that a sign from the gods or what? So I start a Storm Ranger (starting with pure cold, then adding lightning after I'd gotten ludicrously powerful at cold, hopefully I'll get lightning to something decent before the cold immunes start showing up). Give me a week or two, and if I'm still playing at that point, I'll start consolidating some of this info and finish this project up...

    If you have the points for it. Dual element rangers may find that difficult, however, and it's better to skimp on BA than on, for example, Salvation.

    There is a school of thought that says you shouldn't spend any points on BA and instead rely on equipment to boost your AR (attack rating). But a ranger build really has nothing better to spend those other skill points on -- best to get AR boosting equipment AND put points into BA.

    No, not at all. Max the aura you intend to keep on throughout the battle, and any synergies. Best to have a backup aura for immunes of various sorts, but otherwise, don't even think about other combat auras.

    Well, you put no more points into Strength than you need for your equipment, and no points into Energy at all. How much Dex depends really on your style of play. How well do you dodge? I usually raise Vitality to around 120, never more than 160. All the rest goes into Dex. You don't end up with many life points this way, but you're not a melee char, you're a Ranger, and the keyword here is "range" -- stay far from the targets, and dodge ranged counterattacks: if you can do this, you need no Vitality. Of course, nobody's perfect, you will get hit from time to time, so you'll probably want some, but unless you're very poor at dodging, it's a waste to sink too many points here. It's only rarely beneficial, whereas Dex boosts both AR and (perhaps more importantly) damage -- useful all the bloody time. I would insist on no less than 240 here, and for a Ranger, there's simply no such thing as too much Dex, put every last point you can get away with here.

    If you're playing hardcore, of course, that's another story...

    20, plus the synergies, or don't bother with it. Damage-wise, this is the weakest of the elemental auras (remember any Fire Ranger is going to be getting double his listed damage due to his explosive arrow bow). The cool effect helps here, but not enough if you're not pumping its damage to the max.

    Definately PvM. I really have no idea how well Rangers work in PvP, as I never do PvP, but they're very good for PvM...

    ok, this may be an extremely old thread but considering the reset of the ladder I wanted to try out this build. Would this be effective in hell?

    20-holyfire
    20-resist fire
    20-salvation
    20-conviction

    I won't be surprised if nobody responds but I'd just like to know :)

    Eh, probably not. Hell has a lot of fire immunes, so you're counting on the Conviction to deal with that, but once you switch to that, you loose the massive elemental damage from the aura, so you're just relying on whatever your bow can otherwise do. Even in the best possible case, conviction doesn't increase your bow's elemental damage to any more than double what's listed (e.g. if you're lowering your enemy to the minimum -100% lightning resist, you're getting 2-500 lightning damage rather than 1-250 with Skystrike, and if your enemy has more than like 25% lightning resist, you're not getting even that much). It's a great party booster but a poor skill to have to rely on yourself. With a decent bow it may get you to Hell, but it wouldn't be very effective in Hell.

    Fanaticism would be a better alternative, but only if you can get your hands on a bow that does pretty massive physical damage, and even with the most powerful bow in the game (Windforce), it adds less damage to your attacks than the weakest elemental auras.

    I would recommend Holy Shock in place of Conviction, and toss a few points into Resist Lightning as well (although HS is powerful enough that you can skimp on it earlier on and plan on maximizing its synergies last).

    I did an analysis of this some time ago, I'll have to dig it up and post it here one of these days with the actual numbers for the amount of added damage, but basically, your auras can be rated thusly:

    Most powerful against a single opponent: Holy Shock.
    Most powerful against tight formations of monsters: Holy Fire when using an explosive arrow bow (when you add up all the damage done to all the monsters).
    Second most powerful against a single opponent: Holy Fire when using an explosive arrow bow (due to the damage doubling effect).
    Third most powerful: Holy Freeze.
    Second weakest: Fanaticism (although increased attack speed makes up for this slightly, putting it about on par with Holy Freeze if you're using Windforce -- of course, with any less powerful bow, it's proportionally less powerful than Holy Freeze).
    Weakest: Conviction (not really suitable for solo play, great for parties including sorceresses, elemental druids, trap assassins, etc).

    In terms of numbers, Holy Shock adds about twice as much damage as Holy Freeze on average, with Holy Fire being about half-way between the two if you're using an explosive arrow bow (thus getting the double-damage bonus -- if you're not using an explosive arrow bow, Holy Fire does about 3/4ths what Holy Freeze does). Fanaticism does substantially less than any elemental aura unless you're using a bow with an extremely high physical damage (ala Windforce), and even then it's less powerful than any elemental aura per hit. It increases your attack speed so you get more hits in, but not enough to catch up with Holy Fire(x2) or Holy Shock, and arguably is not really better than Holy Freeze (more damage per second using Windforce, but the Freezing Ranger has much more time to deal with his slowed enemies). Conviction isn't really even in the same ballpark.

    Again, I don't have the exact figures handy, but relative power levels would be something like this:

    HShock 2.0, HFire* 1.5, HFreeze 1.0, Fan** 1.0-0.1, Conv 0.3-0.1

    * Holy Fire both adds damage to your attack, and adds to the "splash damage" when using an explosive arrow bow. The 1.5 figure assumes you're just hitting a single target -- when shooting into a group of N monsters, the relative power of Holy Fire = (N + 1) * 0.75 (this is total damage, not damage to each creature).
    ** Fanaticism of course varies greatly depending on the bow. A typical value for, say, a decent rare hydra bow, would be 0.4 or thereabouts.

    Also, a note on randomness: Holy Freeze adds nearly the same amount of damage to every shot, and Holy Fire is nearly as regular. Holy Shock, on the other hand, can add anywhere from four times as much as Holy Freeze would to as little as +1 damage. Fanaticism is also quite erratic with most bows. However, despite the wide variation in possible damage with the latter two skills, over two or three shots, it tends to average out and not be too terribly erratic.

    Anyhow, I hope that helps. Personally, I wouldn't think about taking on Hell with a Fanatical Ranger unless I had Windforce or something damn close to it. Conviction would be a hopeless cause, I think...

    Ok, so that is out of the picture. Thanks for clearing that up. Would you say if I was going to try out a "Power Ranger" aka Holy Fire and Holy Shock, I would be spreading myself too think to do decent damage in hell? I expect to be in a party with this character because I heard Rangers aren't great for solo, but would I be able to hold my own in hell with a group? BTW sorry to bother you with these pesty questions but I saw the thread and it seemed like an awesome build. :)

    Well, it's kinda sucky that you need 102 skill points to max out both Holy Fire and Shock plus all their synergies, but you can get most of the way there by the time you get to Hell. Of the synergies, do Salvation last, and only after you've maxed that out drop the leftover 8 into Blessed Aim. So, setting aside Salvation and BA, you only need 82 skill points to max the rest (which you should get by level 75), and you'll be well prepared to enter Hell, and then pump Salvation while working your way through Hell. (Incidently, if you find an explosive arrow bow, work on maxing Holy Fire first, if you don't find one early on, work on Holy Shock instead.)

    This is an incredibly easy character to play solo with up until Hell. Hell, alas, isn't easy for any character I think. But it's still doable...

    Dream, could you come up with a PVP ranger build that can take on bone necros, sorcs, ... er.. everyone? I'm glad we have an expert on the subject, I always liked rangers but could never quite make them good in PVP. I hope you can help. Thanks

    I have a level 56 ranger using only the freeze aura, and
    I have to say, its amusing when people go "WTF NOOB!!!
    WHY U USIN A BOW?!?!?!?"

    I've always liked staying away from the norm/uber builds.
    I happen to like my sorc/ranger I used to play and after
    coming across some good IAS uniques, I may rebirth that
    old build.

    Thanks for the strat.... paladin has always been my favorite
    since my first char was a cookie cutter zealot.

    "WHAT ARE YOU DRUNK!?! WHY YOU USING A BOW PALLY?"

    "Nice bow pally...you suck. You sit in the back while we fight!" (all from cookie cutter sorcs)

    I got that yesterday while running some nm baal games. Hahaha they made that comment after they had all died in the throne of destruction. Before that comment I was using salvation aura to save em from posion attacks for the second round. For the third, I conveniently switched back over to holy shock for the council...you can guess what happened then. Heh heh heh. Sometimes I wonder why I bother with public games.

    On a side note: I've created a storm ranger on NL USWest level 51, so I don't have access to a widowmaker. I'm currently using the following:

    Guardian Angel
    Angelic Ammy and rings (2)
    lava gouts
    string of ears
    gore riders
    witchwild (shaeld)

    1 offensive and 2 defensive gcs

    My killing power is pretty slow, anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :thumbsup:
