Random Kindness
Having a quite lengthy discussion with my brother last night about how crappy our jobs are. (He works at McDonalds, myself at Pizza Hut). Actually, it wasn't the job itself, it's the customers that make the job as crappy as it is. I worked at McDonalds over the summer, the bottom line is that customers are stupid, period. Getting repeatidly asked "Does a meal come with a drink?" "Why don't you guys take checks?" and having people take forever to order.
Just last night, my brother was telling me how a customer came in and ordered food at a busy time. There were only 5 crew members working and a lobby full of hungry customers. This man had to wait about 6 minutes for his food, not that long. Then he began to call my brother as well as the manager on duty darogitory (sp?) names, the proceeding to throw his drink up against the wall. My brother then yelled at him, demanding him to leave.
Its incidents like this that make the job so crappy, the customers can't even imagine what you look like out of the uniform, that your an actual person.
Now you must be asking youself already "This thread is called 'Random Kindess' but all this guy has been saying is how stupid the customers are". Your right, thats exactly what I've been doing up to this point.
I remember, during the summer I was taking orders at the front counter, a family of 3 had been standing in line for about 5 minutes deciding what they wanted to order, they finally come up to my register and are still confused by what to get. It's amazing how people can stare at a menu and still not know what they want. After taking their order, a man behind them and begins saying "Jesus, its amazing how people can stand in line forever, and still not know what they want". I then said "THANK YOU! Finally, someone knows how I feel".
Apparently, this gentleman had worked at McDonalds when he was my age and knew how bad it was. I end every order saying "Thank you, enjoy your meal" no matter how bad the customer is. Majority of the time, the customer will just say "okay" or something like that.
I remember another time when I was doing drive-thru handout (where you handout food to the drive thru). After I had handed the customer her food she said "Wow, your doing a really good job and I appreciated the way you helped get me my food so quickly". Just that simple comment made my week at work, you have no idea how that lady made me feel.
I've been having a pretty down week, I broke up with my girlfriend, my cell phone broke, grandma died, just not a good week. So, I decided to make myself feel better... I went to Jack in the Box that night for dinner, I drove up to the pay window, the lady told me my total and I handed her my debit card and I asked how much the persons order was behind me, she said it was $6.31, I told her to charge me for that order as well.
Having a down week made me decide to make someones day better by paying for their dinner. I didn't know the person, I'll probably never get to see them, I don't really care. I know in the world of fast food, it's very hectic and stressful. Paying for the persons meal behind me made me feel really good, I just hope more of the world could act this way, by acting on random kindness.
