    Ram

I know there are some good RAM gurus out there. I've decided to upgrade my RAM so I can play WoW after graduation. Yeah, I got sucked in, should be fun though. Anyway, apparently I have expensive RAM, it's PC800. I have 512 and want to bump up to 768 or maybe 1024. Toader has already helped me out a bit and it seems ebay is my best option. But I want to know for sure from some of the smart people here, is PC800 the only kind of RAM I can buy? It's hella expensive. :( And if I'm buying RAM from ebay, is there anything I should look out for?

Why Ebay? RAM prices have come down quite a bit in recent weeks, and you should get it from somewhere like Crucial.com or this place so you know it's (a) new and (b) under warranty if something goes loopy with it.

Yep, I've got a buddy in the same boat as me. Looks like it's waiting for a good price on ebay time.

I saw this sticker on a Ford F350 that said "I'd rather be Stroked than Rammed" it had to do with the Powerstoke diesel of the Ford vs the Dodge Ram truck. I found it funny being more of a Ford guy.

I saw a Dodge truck that had "Maximum Ramage" painted onto the door of the bed while I was on the highway. About an hour later, I stopped at a gas station and was going to tell my buddies who were with me about the lame car. Good thing I didn't because turns out the truck stopped at the same gas station and the dude was right behind me.

If I remember right AJ had a DIMM Ram for a Dell 8100 system, pricey and hard to upgrade as Intel had a monopoly on them at this point.

I recommended Ebay after doing it myself and being satisfied with the upgrade. - I have pretty much the same setup that AJ does, on a Dell 8200.

Ended up paying about $95 each rather than $349 each from Dell.

512, and also left in the 256 cards...going to 768

Memory giant is a good seller, that's where I bought from.

Just get a new mobo and a gig of PC3200 (or whatever you need to match the FSB on your cpu) DDR on newegg. Problem solved, and for considerably cheaper than another 512 stick of RDRAM costs on average.

Ah, I see, you meant $95 for each 256 stick. I've found some other brands on ebay that are $125 for both together. I think I may go with that. I just need to convince someone that RAM is a great graduation present.

    Good luck!

I went with the 95's ...was looking for a seller with a lot of positive feedback.

The problem is that while Dell uses off-the-shelf things like processors, they tend to use custom motherboards, cases, and power supplies. That makes changing the motherboard a non-trivial exercise.

Don't recall him saying it was a Dell... either way, you could probably tack on a new case for $30 and still come out ahead :p
