Racism gene?

Note/disclaimer: I am not a racist, nor do I believe that homosexuals should not be granted full and equal rights in the US.

Today in research class (read: ********/discussion hour), we were talking about hypothetical "research topics" for papers. As we ran through the class, about three girls rattled off their identitical plans to research the "homosexuality gene." Not whether or not it exists, but which gene it is, whether or not it's recessive/what the deal is, etc etc (the liberal ignorance at my school is limitless, but that is a different discussion).

So the topic-sharing wraps around the room to another girl, who says she was looking through old court cases her grandfather was involved in (he was a judge) and found one where the defense attorney attempted to use a hypothetical "racism gene" as a defense against a discrimination suit or somesuch (details were kind of hazy, which is why she wanted to do more research). Immediately the cries from all over the room (did I mention we're not very orderly?): "That's stupid" "No way racism is genetic" "What a lame defense" etc etc etc. I could hardly believe my ears. The same people who had just accepted as truth one of the most hotly debated topics in recent history (the homosexuality gene, but let's not get into that) were now dismissing the exact same thing, because they dissaproved of it. An argument makes sense for something you support, but not for something that you don't?

I can't process my thoughts on this subject into a coherent dialogue at the moment, so I'll go ahead and ask for your opinions and musings. Could racism be genetically linked? Isn't it just as valid to study a possible genetic link to racism as to that of homosexuality? Am I just being a cynical ******* who hates encouraged uniform thought among his peers? (that one was hypothetical). Discuss, ponder, etc.

Peace.
