Quick question(s) on %damage to mana

So I see an item saying, 50% damage goes to mana.
a. Is that any damage recieved?
b. Is that 1 point of damage for 1 point of mana?
c. Is that used in calculation before or after ES?

After es, which is why it's not highly sought after...
1000 cold dmg, 75% ES, 75% CR, 50% DTM, 16 in TK
750 mana lost, 62 dmg taken, 31 mana returned

How does %damage to mana work with mercs ?

They dont have mana so is damage just reduced by this % ?

It is nice though when you are out of mana or close to it and you get hit, it gives you enough mana back to teleport out instantly....like with a manaburn boss.

But yeah, it's usefulness is limited.
