    Questions about resistances

I have a couple of questions about magick damage(as in Bone Spear/Spirit, Teeth, Succubi' Blood Star).
    1) Is Diablo II keeping track of magick resistance as well as of poison/fire/cold/lightning/phisical resistances? If it is kept track of, do you recieve penalty to it in Nightmare/Hell?
    2) Do items with +xx% res all affect magick resistances?
    3) Will Lower Resists curse affect magick resistance, that is, will it help my necro deal more damage with his bone spear?
    4) Will Conviction affect magick resistance?
    5) Is there any way to break cold immunity for a cold sorc?

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Yes, you have an undisplayed Magic Res as well. Unfortunately I don't remember if it is penalised in NM/Hell. RTB?

    2. No. MDR does, however (not a resist, but still).

    3. No.

    4. No.

    5. Use an item with Lower Resist charges, or an Infinity runeword.

    Welcome to the forums:)

    1. Yes...but I'm pretty sure your magic resistance is always 0.

    2. No

    3. I think it did in 1.09 but no longer:(

    4. No

    5. Lower Resists...Infinity runeword, party with a Paladin using Conviction.

There is 1-2 items that give +% magic resists that I can't quite remember right now. Other than that there's only Magic Damage Reduced by (MDR), that can be found on a good number of items (String Of Ears, Vampire Gaze, Gerke's Sanctuary, Gladiator's Bane, etc) but these don't help too much. The good thing about MDR is that it works for both magical and elemental damage. Magic damage is kind of special since it's very hard to resist, and I think that this is an intentional "feature" from Blizzard.

    Edit: Owned by Thrugg:)

Thank you guys for fast responses.
Will try to get the Infinity RW for my sorc (with 2 Bers this won't happen any time soon...).
And with necro, you saved me from wasting points on lower resist.

Once you break immunity with either Lower Resist or Conviction, do minus resist from cold mastery apply in full?

I remember reading somewhere that minus to enemy resistances apply at 1/3 of the original value for an immune monster.

Only semi-permanent effects like LR and Conviction affect immune monsters at all, and they work at 1/5 effectiveness against them.

Effects like CM (and other -enemy resistance items like facets) that only apply on attacks (not semi-permanently) will work once immunity is broken by one of the above. At that stage the monster is not immune any more and so the full effect is applied. So with those it is all or none.

It is 1/5 the original value when applied to an immune monster.

    It's not penalised.

There's one way of getting magic resistance, and that's by crafting a safety shield = +5 - 10% Magic resist.
