Question re getting started in trading

Hello D2 community!

I am not new to d2 - I played tons in 2001-2003. I quit prior to 1.10 because i was starting law school. NOw that I see law school is boring and that 1.10 has added lots of new, cool elements to the game I am starting back up.

I remember back in the day a noob could get started trading (w/o getting "freebies") by collecting 40 chips and trading those for something and then gradually working up the chain.

Now that it seems chip crafting has been nerfed, what is the net best way for a noob to get some items that he could use to trade for some goods items?

thanks.

btw - i am on US east standard ladder. I am using barbs now. (I also bought a 2nd copy of the game which has made muling SO MUCH EASIER. I recommend.)

Welcome to the forums, and welcome back to the game!

Rather than trading chips, people trade perfect gems now. They're used in re-rolling the mods on items, usually Grand Charms.

Cool. That is a little harder than picking up chippies, but it appears you do not need as many.

I see "40 junk jewels for a pul" Is that right? I pul is pretty valuable.

jewels are harder to trade than pgems. not as many people need them.

your best bet is to start a gem mule. keep an extra cube on him. and pick up every gem you can get your hands on and cube them up to perfects. it's a little slow going at first, but that should get you good enough gear to get up to hell hellforge. from there, you should get a good rune to trade for better gear.

i'd recommend building your first character for magic find. my first character starting back up was a sorc and i traded ist + um (hell and nm hellforges) plus some pgems for full tals. she became my mf sorc and now i usually get at least one item worth um-ist in a couple hours of playing every night.

as you may have seen, check the price guide thread in the USEAST trade forum. This should give you an idea of what is valuable. Stuff not on the list should go for Pgems or "low rune".

As for Pul, its value is about where paying with Pgems stops being feasible analogy to coins and dollars; consider pgems as quarters and runes being paper money. Pul is like a $10 bill (the 40:1 is perfect :)). Anything lower can be payed with quarters(pgems) but anything above would be difficult. A Harlequin Crest is worth a pul, to put a value on that.

Maybe also try collecting low runes. They can be traded away in bundles for people who like making runewords but don't keep the low ones around. And always make a mf character first.

If you can run two copies of this game make forge mules and rush them to NM and Hell forge. This way you can get the runes you need to trade for gear.

Right - after thinking about it this seems the best option for me right now.
One cool thing about having two copies (on two cpu's) is that I am basically playing on "players 2" without the risk/annoyance of other players. (not to mention the risk-free muling.)

Strangely, Blizzard bundles the completley worthless strategy guide with new versions of the game. I use it as a coaster.
