Question about sockets in Magic/Rare

AFAIK, if a Magic item or Rare item has sockets, they have to come from an affix. i.e. Mechanic's, Artisan's, or Jeweler's. The sockets cannot come from the "base item".

Is this correct?

You are mostly correct. Sockets can also be added using the socket quest reward in which case rare items will always get a single socket and magic items will receive either 1 or 2 sockets (iirc it was an even 50% chance).

3 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item + Stone of Jordan = Add 1 Socket To a Rare Item
Rare Items can only have one socket. You cannot add sockets to items that don't normally have sockets. You can not use this on a Rare with one socket. You can only add one socket to a zero socket Rare Item.

I love the recipe that PsycheNoob posted. I cannot wait to find great rare item and the fact that I will need to find SoJ to be able to socket it :evil:

Btw AFAIK the only way to have 2-socketed rare item is to find/gamble/possibly cube? one with Mechanic's prefix and be lucky to roll 2 sockets. And it can only be Body Armor, Circlet, Helm, Shield or Weapon (which can have sockets of course).

Unless your on classic, larzuk will punch a hole in your rare items for you as well as white and magic.

A rare item can have up to 2 sockets if you self find it that way.
